I'm sure this question has already been asked, and I have read the relevant article, but I'm still pretty confused so thanks for any answer and the patience!

Basically, i'm trying to sort out our spending money for vegas. OH wants to take traveller's cheques but I'm not really a fan. We have natwest and HSBC current accounts but i haven't heard good things about using those cards abroad. I don't mind applying for a new account but I really don't want to be messing around changing direct debits etc.

We have a barclarycard which we'll be using to pay for hotels for the rest of our 14 night stay. I know not the best card but it will be getting paid off or balance transferred when we get back.

Thanks for any help at all!

I have a Post Office credit card to use in USA. I've had it for about 3 years now, but only ever really use it abroad. It has no fees, so we use for hotels, food, shopping etc etc, and then we just use the ATM's there every few days to take out cash as we need it. We get charged for using ATM, and also by our own bank, but it saves us messing around with traveller cheques or having too much cash, so we look at the fee as a small insurance fee :rotfl:

(PS - We always take more than 1 bank card, so if one gets lost/stolen etc, were not without access to cash)

    Anyone stayed at the Rio?

I usually go off strip to the Orleans(which is great and can usually be got for about $25 a night) but fancy a change.

The pool looks good at the Rio.

    Any opinions anyone.

ps i have been there for the buffet and seen the masquarade on the sky.

    Hey photome!
Very similar to me - we love The Orleans and always stay there now (with the odd night at a posh hotel as a treat). Me & OH stayed at Rio in 2007 for 14 nights. I wrote a LONG review on Trip Advisor - link below - if you page down it entitled "14 nights at The Rio".

I dont mind being off-strip at all and the Gold Coast which I am sure you have visited if you stay at The Orleans is over the road so we didnt feel isolated at all. Pretty nice place. I would stay there again. Though the review may be slightly out of date.

If you are comparing The Rio to The Orleans then it is better quality IMO, although I love the feel of The Orleans and know what to expect.

Happy planning! PS - when are you thinking of going?

Vegas is relatively safe. Spread your risk by leaving most cash in the room safe, split it between you and your OH, carry a muggers wallet ie a cheap one stuffed full one one dollar bills that you give up if mugged.

Or you can similarly get Amex TCs thru Crown and if they get mugged, you can get them replaced.

Excellent tip Froggitt - RE muggers wallet!
I had never thought of that!
    Thanks.

(PS - never had any trouble in Vegas touch wood)

I carry a muggers and tipping wallet and put "useless" cards eg tesco club card etc in it.

what debit card do you use? I think the ones we have are very expensive to use over there!

Also, has anyone used the post office travel money card? is this any good?

    Hello all,

I am sure that I recently read some posts about "Jolt / One Roam" on either this thread or the 2009 thread HOWEVER, I have just done a search for both and nothing has been found. Either I am going mad or the function isnt working... Can someone please try and help me?

I bought some SIM cards for use in Vegas in 2008 through Jolt/One Roam. They were great and I really rated them on here back then. I still have them and thought I would investigage using them again on my return trip in July this year (yippee!).

Having done a google search I can find a site for One Roam however the call charges are stupidly high and when investigating further it says USA sims now unavailable.

Has anyone had any recent experience of this - as above, I am sure I remember seeing something on the vegas thread lately, but my search proved fruitless.

Basically, I am wondering what the current situation is - has anyone used them recently? I seem to recall that pebblesmax used them and frequents vegas often? Any advice from anyone would help! Thanks.

Thanks for that, we always stay on strip for the bulk of stay, usually head for the Orleans at weekends to save money, We like the feel of the Orleans to and there has always been room around the pool, we also have a car.

Thinking of going in August (to bake) we usually go April ish
