Ive been seeing all these special offers for the mgm and was wondering in relation to flamingos which is the better hotel. I really want to go for location more then anything. Having never been to vegas before, want to stay right in the middle, which i know the flamingo is, but there is only about $50 dollars in the diffence between the two hotels.
Also if i booked now for september, is it easy to cancel if a better rate comes along.
    thanks

I agree that the Flamingo is in a better location as it is centre strip. The MGM is a good 20-30 mins walk south then another 10-15 mins from the front of the MGM to your room.

If going further north it took us 30 mins to walk from the Palazzo to Paris.

You can use the Deuce to get up and down the strip which costs $7 for a 24 hour pass.

I have never stayed at the Flamingo, but Duchy stays there. From what I have read you should try and get a Go room. Have you considered Bally's?

The MGM is a very good hotel with nice rooms.

Where are you thinking of booking, is it direct with the hotel? As stoneman says, you need to read the T&C's of any booking to make sure you can cancel 48-72 hours before arrival.

It's my 40th on 21st June hence the trip but way to hot for me then so I am planning to go in November (much much cooler lol). Also gives me more time to save up for the slots.
    Thank you all who post.

    Next question:

Is it worth £20 pp each way (£80) to choose seats, the only 'pair' is the very back, LHS of the BA plane, all exit seats cannot be booked.

    What are all your thoughts?

We decided to do this. We figured that having no-one next to us was worth it. Just a note though to say that the seat near the window does have a gap, so the person there won't be able to lean up against the window - not sure if that helps with any decision making. You'll also be last off the plane so back of the queue for immigration......

That's my birthday! But my birthday trip will prob be in Sept, as June is too close to our March/April trip.

Well mooky - I will think about you and wish you a Happy Birthday when I am tucking in :)

Its NEVER too hot in vegas - I LOVE the 112 degree heat... honestly!!

... as for Matt Goss - I am now singing "I Owe You Nothing, Nothing, Nothing At All" in my head!! Thanks for that (I am off the age where being a bronze brosette was cool - yeah right!!!) lol.

I may just have to put a visit to see him on "my list"

stoneman - I am surprised at you!!

Taxis are fine for a bunch of you.....but youll anyway try walking up to Bellagio fountains on the first day there, get blisters, and think "it didnt look that far"!!!

Right opposite MB is the road that leads onto Koval, which goes all the way up to Wynn/FSM/Palazzo.....theres not much past there unless youve got specifics eg Peppermill, Walmart on Charleston, Downtown. If strip looks busy, tell taxi to go up Koval.

You dont want to waste your trip in a cab watching the fountains every half an hour.

Thanks that is a really useful tip, think i will start making a list of useful things found in this thread, imagine how long it will be by July :rotfl:

I've got these seats book on my flights as well! Didn't think about the immagrarion thing.. Ach well as long as I'm in Vegas I don't mind.

Do you know if these seats recline the full way or since they are at the back they don't recline at all? It would be a novilty to me to recline my seat on a plane. I never do it since I know how horrible it is to be stuck with acreclibe seat infront of me. Though if there is noone behind me then quids in as soon as the seat belts sign is off my seat is going back hehe

the seats at the back do recline - maybe not as far as others but some at least. I also never recline. But beware that people will tend to lean on the back of your seat there...most annoying when you're just drifting off or already asleep and someone comes up and hurls themself against the back of your seat. But they are still great seats (relatively speaking) for a couple to have.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

If location is important...then it has to be Flamingo, book a standard room and try to upgrade to a GO room at check in for $20 trick, it didnt work for me but they let ne have one for an extra $20 a night which was cheaper than booking it.

MGM is more upmarket but I have had issues everytime I have checked in there. NOn smoking room rqstd (non available) 2 queens rqstd (only king available) and as for the $20 trick i think you can forget it at the MGM

having said all that there are some cracking rates available at MGM but I have also seen Flamingo rates at $40 a night

    Pools are great at both

Yes I've stayed at the Flamingo several times (and made reservations for 2 more stays yesterday) . My first visit to Vegas a few years back we spent a lot of time at MGM as we were seeing shows there and had friends staying there -and TBH I've never fancied it because it's so vast and then when you finally get from your room to the Strip you then need to get to centre Strip. Please don't get me wrong it's a really nice hotel just not my style-and the line for the buffet was always so long we never actually ate there.

The Flamingo has an old Vegas feel about it which I like and Marguritaville is always really lively in the evening. For a first visit I'd say the Flamingo's location is far better. The Go rooms are nice -I've never stayed in a standard room there but have one booked for March (it's comped but I may upgrade when I ger there. If I don't I'll do a proper comparison post on them)

MGM is smarter and glitzier and huge -the Flamingo is better located and friendlier

The Flamingo have a policy of not upgrading from a deluxe to a Go room with the $20 trick-never say never but the trick is likely to only get you a standard "mini suite" (just a bigger non renovated room) and not a Go room. However if you DO get a Go room $20 is likely to get you a Go with view and the view of the fountains is wonderful (last 2 trips I got these rooms without even asking for an upgrade or waving $20)
