It used to be the case that if you have a couple of accounts then the fee was waved.

I would go with FD but at £10 a month fee ? on your bike. I can't deposit £1500 so I'm out.

    Will look into HSBC.

There are various other ways to get the fee waived, including (if I remember correctly) having a savings account with FD.

I know most people hate them but I like A&L, staff are nice, got use to there website and have not had any problems with the service.

To answer the origiinal question, YES i am happy with my banks. I have current accounts with A+L and abbey and saving accounts with natwest, barclays and ulster.

i dont really have any special needs and only use basic facilities. always use online banking, all payments by credit card which is paid off in full at the end of the month, no overdraft...so may be these are contributing towards my good experience.......

I wonder how many many people left first direct when they started charging for current accounts with limited funds going in.?

Less than 1,000 as very few people were effected. You only got charged if you had NO other products with them. Even £1 in a savings account avoids the fee. It was only ever designed to try and get the 50,000 dormant accounts they had closed down.

I've been with Smile for years and always been very happy with it - until I got the dreaded card reader!! Had issues getting it to work in the first place but eventually got it sorted. Now been sent a new card so went online to do some banking, it doesn't work and has completely locked me out. Rang the 24/7 helpline and a message says that due to the severe weather the call centre is now closed ... good job they don't run hospitals

Seriously considering changing and FD sounds interesting ...

Quite a few posters in this thread are keen on First Direct. Not surprising given that First Direct is a wholly owned subsidiary of HSBC, the best bank in the world IMHO ;)

    Dave.

I totally agree with what you said!

Notice how the majority of people seem to be happy with the original banks on here i.e Barclays, HSBC (inc First Direct), Natwest and LTSB.

No big concensus towards the building society's who have converted to banks so far

That is an excellent point, in my experience the 'wannabe' banks Abbey, A&L, Halifax etc are very poor in terms of service. I am with HSBC and think that they are excellent. My dad has been with Barclays since recors began. In my opinion venturing outside the big four is not advisable! Like they say 'The old ones are the best'

That has probably got an awful lot to do with market share which, I believe, is 75%-80% skewed to those providers you name (including the RBS brand).

The one that stands out for me (always) on service is First Direct though. Relatively small provider that consistently gets people willing to praise it.

If you reworded the question "Which bank really pi$$es you off?" then words like "Abbey", "A&L", "Santander" would leap off the screen at you.

You took the words out of my mouth, the last paragraph really struck a cord.
