HSsnowmen.gifHi there! This is the Daily Thread for the last day of 2009! It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
xmas-smiley-010.gifMorning OS friends.hellowave.gif
HSsnowwelcome.gifKatsu - good to have you with us!
Taplady - hugs.gif Really pleased that the hospital are thinking of sending Janet home. How did you do at SW or shouldn't I ask?giggle.gif
SunnyGirl - Still keeping you all in my prayers and thoughts. Have mailed you hon.
LadyG are getting over your cold and that you can visit your husband tomorrow. And thank you for the lovely message on the Daily yesterday, I hadn't read it when I posted in the afternoon. I was really touched.
Haribo - Glad to have you back and hope BT pay through the nose for messing you around!
Beemuzed - I hope your party goes well this evening and that you sort out all the dietry requirements! Also wishing your DH well and that his heartburn eases.
jc - You have probably already decided but I think you and your family might enjoy the roast more today rather than hung-over tomorrow? It does depend what time you eat though as I imagine they will be chomping at the bit to get out...giggle.gif
Candy - hope you enjoyed your retail therapy
Marie - actually I did enjoy the prawn sashimi, especially dipped in the wasabi and soy sauce and the yellow pepper roll was Ok too. I don't like salmon or fish eggs of any kind so would not have those again. None of us liked the Miso soup she bought (Waitrose instant stuff) but Rachel assures me the real thing is nicer.
Jackieglasgow - Really good to see you back posting again!
Pooky - First, shave your cat..:rotfl: (saves picking the fur out from between your teeth later..:rotfl:) Seriously though, I am so sorry to hear about your husband and hope they get your benefits sorted out soon.hugs.gif
I so wanted another roast turkey for tomorrow but nowhere around here has any past Christmas eve. It was the same last year but I think I hoped for different this year.. giggle.gif I know I can defrost some of the Christmas turkey but I really fancied the whole shebang again. I love turkey, can you tell?
Started the inventory of all foodstuff in the kitchen. My OH got on the floor an did the corner cupboard. Right at the back was the bottle bank! For two people who rarely drink we had a heck of a lot of alcohol in there. Have three bottles of Port as I used to quite enjoy the odd glass, but no reason to open one now. Plus two bottles of champagne - one from 1999 - have NO idea if it's still drinkable but may crack it open on NYD when we have our dinner and find out. Lots of wine, as clients often bought me a bottle or three so they just got stashed. We have given away a lot as gifts but still a lot left. There was also plenty of canned items so that will help with the Store-cupboard challenge for January.
Todays dinner will be left over roast beef with horseradish mash, plus the usual three veg. Brunch will be bacon sandwiches again on HM bread around 1100ish. My OH doesn't go back to his day job til next Monday so is enjoying lie ins and brunch rather than breakfast! He has even cooked porridge for us this week which always makes me feel full for hours.
WM is on, and the breadmaker should be finished shortly and then if Tris doesn't log on by 0530 I am going back to bed. I am just finishing a nice cup of redbush tea and can hear that it is raining again outside.
Hope everyone has a fun and safe evening tonight if they go out and that you all bring in the New Year with someone you love. (even if it's only yourself..:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:)
With love and light to all.

Good morning everyone. I've been MIA for the last few days because I've had a bad back which makes it difficult to sit at my desk for too long. It's easing now but has been a real nuisance. I've been trying to keep up with the thread, so welcome to newbies and lots of (((hugs))) to those who have been unwell or have poorly family members to nurse.

Our Christmas day was lovely, spent with good friends and not having to cook for the first time in decades was a real treat and took my mind off not being able to see the family on the day. I Skyped them all in the morning which was the next best thing, but I can't wait to see them all for real.

The weather on Christmas day and Boxing day was lovely - cold but sunny and dry. Since then it hasn't stopped raining and we've had two torrential thunderstorms, but it's not as bad as in the UK. I hope you're all managing to keep warm and safe.

Not having had to cook Christmas dinner has meant that I have not got loads of turkey to use up, so we've had lots of warming stews and casseroles, and I've been making lots of soups, too. Dinner today will be potatoes dauphinois with bacon bits and mushrooms, and I have lots of onions looking for a home so I shall make some soup this morning.

I can't believe that 2009 is nearly over. It's been an eventful year with a lot of challenges and, TBH, I shall be glad to see the back of it. I have our next visit to the UK to look forward to within the next month, when we'll be taking presents and having a second Christmas.

Anyway, off to put the kettle on again.

I hope to call back again but, if I don't, I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year - I hope 2010 brings you all good health and happiness, with a little wealth thrown in.

Good Morning Diva, d1965 and Mioliere. Always good to log on at this time and see some company already! Diva, we wanted turkey for tomorrow too having not had any in Germany at Christmas, so was disappointed not to find any available anywhere. I wonder why? Ah well, I'm sure there'll be some along eventually!
d1965 - hope your son gets things sorted soon - very unsettling time for all.
Mioliere, nice to see you! Sorry about the back. Mine has been good for a while now, but I keep my fingers crossed as it's a real nagging pain that gets you down, isn't it?
Well, I'm up early finishing off tonight's food. My guest with the dietary problems is now catered for, although her choices will be more limited than those available for everyone - but I guess she's used to that. The BM is on for rolls at present. I also need to make up a bed for my DB who is coming up for the night. DS and family return from Germany on Saturday morning so I have that to look forward to as well. We didn't take many presents with us as it seemed silly to transport them both ways, so a second Christmas awaits!
SunnyGirl - still thinking of you all.
I hope those feeling unwell get better soon. Have a good day people. Enjoy New Year's Eve - I love the feeling of a brand new beginning! ((HUGS)) if needed.

    Morning everyone.
Not much to tell really. H has to go to work and according to the powers that be it's a normal working day........hmmmm funny how the invidividual departments end up being sent home at lunch time but my H and his crew are always the last to leave........
Anyway not particularly excited about NYE, big fuss over nothing. Shall probably go to bed normal time and end up being woke by the [STRIKE]blitz[/STRIKE] fireworks that last forever :rotfl:
Not sure what my plans are today, will have to think of something otherwise DS starts bouncing off the walls with boredom :o

Might make some cheese scones or cheese muffins. Am sick to death of sweet stuff :o
Tea tonight will be creamy chicken and pepper cous cous (according to planner :D).

Sunnygirl - thinking of you all xxx

Diva - my H has been scouring the shops for reduced turkey and nothing. Still full price......but I guess at least we have some just not at a price I am prepared to pay :rotfl:

D1965 - sorry to hear about your DSS splitting up with his GF.

I watched the programme last night on Ch4 about the Boxing day Tsunami caught on camera - hard to watch and listen to peoples stories but it make me so thankful that I still have my family with me. I need to remember that more often, especially when I want to throttle DS :o

Anyway want to wish you all a Happy New Year and all the best for 2010. For those of you in need lots of hugs for you guys too.

    Morning all

Diva - I wish I had known - there were loads of turkeys near me yest (although they were frozen ones - did you mean fresh???) we bought a fresh turkey crown before christmas but as we had dinner at DD1's we froze it and are cooking it now for tomorrow.

    Beemuzed - enjoy your party!

Bitsy - I am at work this morning, we always used to finish at 1 o'clock but the powers that be have decided we have to stay open until 6:eek: We are doing it on a rota basis though to make it fairer and I start the day off thank goodness

Remmie - welcome, you have broken the ice now so you should stay with us - it's a great place to be:D:D:D

SunnyGirl - thinking of you and yours. I will be remembering you all when I light my candle tonight! Hope you are all coping as best you can.

Today as I say is work followed by prep-ing all veg for tomorrow (I know might loose some vitamins this way but don't think it will matter for once:D) Am looking forward to laying table as I love to get all my best stuff out and don't get many opportunities. Table cloth was ironed before I came to work this morning. We do the whole christmas dinner again on NYD including crackers! I love it.

This evening there are about 25 of us going to the local to celebrate together, going in cars and leaving them there and putting walking boots and woolly jumpers in the car in case we can not get taxis home and end up walking! Snow showers forecast for this evening but I don't suppose that will stop us!!!

Hope you all have a good day and just in case I do not manage to get back on (although I hope to catch up with news later, especially SG) I hope you all have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year and thank you all for all the love and support through 2009:A

    love

  • Good Morning All

D1965 - sorry to hear about DSS
Mioliere - hope the back gets better soon.

Missed the thread yesterday as we had major trauma's yesterday. Tuesday evening OH had what he thought was indigestion but to my mind was too painful - called the paramedics out who took him to hospital. DD & I followed in the car. He stayed in overnight and it turns out that it was his heart, despite being fit and overall healthy he has really high cholestrol and narrowing of the arteries. The docs told him he has been lucky as had a very early warning that some people don't get. He has statins and will be going back in the New Year for more tests. We do eat healthily here in that most food is home cooked from scratch. However OH has a very unhealthly addiction to cream cakes and cream in general. His family eat cream cakes like other people have biscuits - his Dad used to be a bakers roundsman and got them for free - the inlaws have very small dinners and the box of cakes comes out after which you need to fill yourself up. Anyway - no more of that (the rest of us don't like them!). Also stress has played a large part - as small business owers we have had a lot of that! but also OH has been stressed as his mum & dad have shown him recently that they really don't care - they make out they do but when it comes to it they are not there for him especially if they think that he might need money.

So very emotional day yesterday, am glad it happened whilst we are still in 2009 and 2010 is going to be a better year for us - we have to make sure it is.

Tomorrow we are off to China Town to meet my dad & step mum who are treating us to dinner - for the past few years we have visited the inlaws on New Years day but decided that this was not a good start to the year lol :rotfl:so are going to do something we really enjoy instead.

Will probably go to bed early tonight and turn the phone off :D love Xmas but am a New Year bah humbug. Not sure what is for dinner was planning lasagne - if do that OH will have a small portion with lots of salad.

Anyway many apologies for the long post, will have another cup of tea and a little surf then will get some housework done so can wake up to 2010 in a clean house.

Have a good one, whatever you are doing.x
