Well after lots of swearing and frustration I have my first granny square I'm sure they must have heard me in France shouting and laughing after I finished it, I was so chuffed!!

If anyone is struggling with rounds the video I watched was for the whole square note just the first round as most of them are its brilliant even for slow learners as me :-)

MrsTine I now hope with my new skills to attempt your pattern.....again!

well done! I love the colours you have used :) I actually have some green cotton type stuff somewhere... maybe if I got another colour as well I should have a crack at some squares again? hmmmm *ponders*
I actually struggle with squares as mine gradually change size over time :) so number 1 will be about half a centimeter different to number 10 say... and it ruins the whole thing lol
Round ripples it doesn't matter on :D

Thank you glad you liked it I've just made my second one, I'm pleased with my tension, when I knit I do the same as you and get lots of different sizes but crochet I seem to be ok with. :j

I'm getting my double knit wool from QD or Wilkinsons for 99p 100g balls. I noticed that they had 8ply do you know what this is and is it suitable to crochet with, can you use it with double knit when changing colours?

mmmmm I'd say have a look at the 2 next to each other and see if they are similar - I would generally stick to one "type" if in doubt - the size of needle you need with each type of wool might vary and then you get different size stitches...
Anything is worth a try tho ;)

Oh I'd so love to be able to crochet! I am adamant that I am learning this year!! Never managed to get that art of crochet magizine though =(

Few questions; are crochet hooks just like knitting needles? (i.e. different sizes)
And what kind of wool do I need to use, i.e I'd like to use Arran wool to make a really think jumper/blanket/anything else I can think of. Also that eyelash wool to crochet up teddies and such. Is this possible?

    TIA

    hiya nikki

yes they are different sizes. you got a 4mm with the art of crochet which i found to big for the wool i had. so i bought a 2mm one which is so small i think i should have got a 3mm one!!! i dont know about the wool as i just use what my mum gives me. i have used feathered wool to make a amigurumi mouse so it came out fluffy. hope that helps, i only just started!

well, i am half way through a little dragon for me to have as a keyring. i am using a 2mm hook which is too small and i have a huge blister on my finger from trying to do the stitches tight! i will get him finished!!!!!! i will, i will, i will!!!!!!!!!!

well done on the granny squares everyone. the one i did for my baby sock monkey was small cos i kept getting lost making it so i know how hard it is!!!

Hopefully my dragon will be finished tomorrow (blister permitting!! ;))

I would say leave things like the eyelash wool for a while - it's probably one of the hardest wools to crochet with as it's harder to cound the stitches :)
Buy a set of crochet hooks of Ebay - they're not expensive :) And if you can get some marked with both UK and US sizings so much the better as you don't have to try and remember what size H is etc :)
Start small - the squares are good to start with... and personally I like the round ripples as they are easy and let you practice "getting your hand" for crochet :)
If you can read patterns then find a book that marks theirs as suitable for beginners etc pick something easy to start with :)

    Hello everyone,

This is my first time on this thread although I've been lurking for a while. You're all making such lovely things - I'm so impressed! :T

I've wanted to learn to crochet for years and now I'm taking the plunge. I picked up the The Art of Crochet magazine to get the instruction DVD and the free hook and yarn - well worth the €1.50 I think.

I'm not very good though - all I've done so far is practise the chain stitch - it's quite wonky really as my stitches are all different sizes. :o I guess I will just have to keep practising! Any other beginners here?

I haven't read the whole thread yet but I will because I just know you guys will inspire me to keep at it and hopefully help me when I get stuck!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!
