Longstanding lack of motivation - how can I break out of this rut?

  • Thanks mrcow - interestingly, I have had feedback at work that I am very hard on myself if things don't go to plan, and have a tendancy to take on too much because I won't say 'no'.

And believe me, I'm well aware that there's more than life than dusting - the problem is that I waste so much time online or watching tv that I don't feel that I'm achieving anything.

Sounds familiar... my 2010 resolution is to go to bed earlier with a good book and stop watching so much mindless tv... so far, it is working and OH and I actually share more time together and lots of chatter. I also wake up feeling much more refreshed. I have also decided to give up the volutary work I do as a trustee. I realised it eats up too much into my personal time and have done it for two years now, so now need to prove to anybody that I am Superwoman. ..I suffer form this lack of motivation and I foud that doing just one thing at a time helps..
  • Hi everyone, and wow, so many new posts - clearly I've hit a nerve here!

Wasn't able to post yesterday as absolutely pooped after delivering training all day, but did manage to tidy the living room and do the washing up before bed.

Its quite amazing how the achievements of Sunday have helped motivated me further - I had the opportunity during my training session to write a list of everything that needs doing in my home - not to depress me further, but to get everything down on paper and out of my head - it feels very liberating!!

I've decided to take 30 mins a day to work on 1 item, but did get sidetracked tonight by playing on the Wii with OH & DD - but I count that as family time!!

OH has taken care of the bathrooms today - clearly our serious talk last week about how I felt in relationship has hit home, as he is doing far more around the house than he ever has, and as a result I feel less taken for granted.

So all in all I feel in a good place, mainly down to all your advice - sincerely, a huge thank you.

I'm going to sign off now, but will post my list of things to do tomorrow, to help keep me accountable!!

This is a free mind map app. I used it for work and use it for home stuff. It works better for me than lists.

  • Morning all, hope this finds you well!

Here's my list of stuff to do:

    * Sort through boxes in spare room & freecycle / ebay / advertise on intranet as appropriate

    * Buy camera case & spare battery for new camera

    * Fix the treadmill (so I can try to get some exercise!)

    * Sort through DVDs and CDs

*[STRIKE] Sort out DDs wardrobe, in particular top shelf that I have commandeered![/STRIKE]

    * DD to sort out and chuck cuddly toys!

    [STRIKE]* Tidy round in office[/STRIKE]

[STRIKE]* Sort through papers in office and file[/STRIKE]

    * Action stuff in the 'Action' folder

[STRIKE]* Weed out the spare coats in office wardrobe[/STRIKE]

    * Sort through shelves in office wardrobe and get rid of stuff

    * Reorganise stuff in the main office shelving unit, in particular
    * put magazine fodlers on bottom shelf
    * sort through PC box

    * Sort through my bedside drawers & organise

    * Buy energy saving thingy for TV

    * Sort out understairs cupboard

    * Sort out kitchen cupboards

I got home from work early yesterday and OH and I spent an hour or so doing the tasks which have been struck through, and again, its made me feel sooo empowered!! I can't do anything tonight as I'm going out after work, and feeling a bit annoyed that I can't keep the impetus up, but I know that's the perfectionist in me coming out... :o
  • Right - have just decided tommorow will be the day I tackle DD's bedroom. I know how much she and I love it when it's done so.............

I am going to strip bed and put clean sheets on - I ordered a v. cheap and wonderfully warm 13.5 tog duvet from A*da and cheap pillows and make the bed look v.cosy and plump.

I am going to sort through teddies and rehome a few she doesn't really love.

Her dolls I am going to sort all the bits into bags for her and help her dress them all.

Go through her books and charity/recycle any she doesn't read any more or are too old for her.

Sort all her pony mags into a magazine file

Put all the bits from different playsets into their own little baskets and try and keep on top of keeping them like that. I find she actually plays with the things once they neat

Once I've done all that I am going to vow to do five minutes in the morning to make bed in there, draw curtains and do a quick tidy round. Then when I tuck her in before I go to bed I will do another five min tidy - that way I think I can keep on top of it.

A quick vacumn and dust once a week should then be ok.

    Feel tired already!......wish me luck

    I x

i feel like i could have written the OP.....i have such little lack of motivation and will power.
i have a lot of stuff i really need to get sorted...bills (even tho i have sat here and worked out my finances..life will be a squeeze but worth debt free life :) )
sort my avon order forms and deliver them.
change name at bank...10 months after getting my decree absolute :)
cancel our disney holiday..before the 20 day deadline i have :)
    cancel lovefilm
    reduce my sky package
    defrost my freezer
put away the montains of clean washing, wash the mountains of dirty stuff
hoover upstairs yada yada yada the list goes on and on

but i vow to take it one step at a time...i turn 30 in 2011 and i vow to start my 30's as i did my 20's (no not single nad drunk lol) but slimmer and debt free :D
exsercise bike....will aim for at least 30 minutes a day...more if possible :D

How are you getting on lolly??
  • Sod all the lists, organise yourself a cleaner and ironing person, and pay to have the work done, if it causes you so much stress and ansgt.

Delegate the jobs you don't want to do, and the ones you don't mind doing syddenly become much easier to manage!

Not at all MSE I know, but stuff it, life's too short!

    :p

Sounds like you are on a roll! I did her room - just about killed me - but you know when it is done you just feel great and it is so much easier to tidy. I have done utility room today - I have bagged up outgrown shoes/trainers for recyling - 3 bags of bits for charity shop and two carriers of rubbish for bin from playroom - hurrah.

Rushing now as school finishes soon.......

    Back later -
