You're right, it doesn't, it just needs to be good enough. I'm wondering - do you need things to be perfect? Is this what stops you from starting, because you find it difficult to settle for good enough ?

Yes, there's definitely an element of that, adding in the fact that the job seems so big I don't know where to start.

With this particular job, I had promised my brother that I would divide these items (photos, letters, newspaper cuttings etc) and put them into a photo album each. It never happened. However, I was due to visit him just before Christmas, and with less than 4 days left before I was due to go, realised that I didn't have to prepare his album for him, he can do that if he wishes - it was amazing how little time was needed to separate the papers, put his in a box and put mine into an album. As I said, it does need finishing off - its not in a proper chronological order, but my feelings are as long as everything is in one place, it really doesn't matter!

I think self-discpline is the key. Easy for me to say, as I have very little in my life, you all seem to have families to look after!

I am a mature student at college on an access course, hoping to go to uni this year, and I work part time, and as it becomes harder to get into uni, I have to spend more time studying to ensure I get nothing less than As. It also helps that I spent four years in the RAF when I was 18, so discipline was drummed into me.

I have a very strict timetable for my life. I shop inbetween lectures on a Tuesday, I do my housework on a Friday for one hour (I live on my own in a small cottage so the place is never untidy!), Ironing is done after work on a Sunday, Paperwork and bills are dealt with on a Saturday night, it does sound very regimented but it means that there is nothing left undone and that I am always on top of things. I also don't watch TV although I do have one and will be freecycling it next week, and I allow myself a certain amount of downtime for the internet.

Emails are dealt with as soon as they arrive, I always have stockpiles of things so I rarely run out - I have a diary in which I keep track of when I've ordered oil, coal, etc and note forward when I need to order the next delivery. About six months ago when I knew i was going to college I purged the house of everything that had no use, so I have nothing in my wardrobe that either doesn't fit or have a purpose, no odd dishes or plates, I have a filing system in place and when something comes in it is filed immediately.

It does sound very anal and friends have commented on it, but it means that I can concentrate on my studies, I also work 25 hours a week and I would hate to be rushing around in an untidy house trying to pay a bill.

The most organised woman I ever met had 8 children and bred horses! She was even more organised than me, her children had an electric toothbrush in their bedrooms and she had a massive room in her house with all the children's clothing hung up in individual wardrobes, it was amazing to see!

Please don't iron tea towels ever, they really don't need it, fold from dryer or from the line and don't worry about it. I think you are like a lot of us, harsh on yourself doing a great job but not realising how much you actually achieve.

The point about not starting because you want perfection also rings true for me and I am sure for many. Enjoy your DD they grow up so quickly hope she has a lovely birthday party next week.

  • Well done newstart2010 - you've done really well today! If you're still up - put out your clothes for morning and do five minute tidy round family room - it won't make it immaculate but it defo helps - plump cushions etc! Oh dear - that sounds a bit flylady but it is nice to come down to in the morning!

Off to bed myself - need to get dd to hospital appointment tommorow for x-rays etc before she can go back to school - although still snowing here and not sure roads will be passable - we will see in the morning.

Sleep well - and a quick pat on back to me for 2 AF days on trot!
