Longstanding lack of motivation - how can I break out of this rut?

my god Lolly, I am exhausted just looking at your list of things to do!0

and thats not even half...it seems that my darling family have a distinct lack of ability to clear up after theirselves..or finish any task they start....i mean ds 2 is only 1 so i forgive him...ds1 has ADHD so that goes part way to explain it and OH is a man so i guess i know why things are they way they are lol.
i love my life....however i would make changes...my lack of friends being one...my huge pile of never ending washing (maybe i should just donate half of it to charity im sure we dont need alllll the clothes we seem to have )....training my men to a be a bit more helpful...oh such fun0 -
a great start newstart!
I find I feel overwhelmed by so much to do at home and that leaves me unmotivated toeven start.
What works best for me is break everything down into little jobs - 10 mins at a time does get jobs done over the day or a few days. It's getting started that's the key, so I tell myself 5 mins is enough, or just dealing with 3 pieces of paper that need filing. Sometimes I just do i what I have promised myself,i.e. just 5mins and other times it gets me going and I'll do half an hr.
I use a desk diary to keep weekly and daily lists of jobs that needs doing - helps me feel in control and less overwhelmed if I am not keeping it all in my head and might be forgetting stuff. It means stuff that definitely needs doing by a particular day isn't forgotten and more long term jobs are re-entered at the begining of each week.
I agree it is very easy to waste time on line, but I think if the internet wasn't there, I would find other ways to procrastinate.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
How are you doing today newstart? Finally got out today as snow looks to b thawing a bit although more due tonight so not sure how long freedom will last.
Still going to be at home with dd this week as not allowed back to school yet - must do wardrobe/drawers - recycle and chuck!
Hope everyone is ok and having a good day.

I just read this thread with interest. This is also me! Anything to do with housework I put off. Very organised at work and leisure things/ events etc but stuff to do at home - rubbish.
As a lot of other have mentioned I use lists. I have list upon list but also find that some of the really horrid jobs just get moved form one list to the next therefore I avoid doing them!!SPC 2011 #758 - no target just a surprise #20 - £365 in 365 days 4/365 Olympic chal #46 - debt free by July 2012 £6739/£189390 -
Right - have just decided tommorow will be the day I tackle DD's bedroom. I know how much she and I love it when it's done so.............
I am going to strip bed and put clean sheets on - I ordered a v. cheap and wonderfully warm 13.5 tog duvet from A*da and cheap pillows and make the bed look v.cosy and plump.
I am going to sort through teddies and rehome a few she doesn't really love.
Her dolls I am going to sort all the bits into bags for her and help her dress them all.
Go through her books and charity/recycle any she doesn't read any more or are too old for her.
Sort all her pony mags into a magazine file
Put all the bits from different playsets into their own little baskets and try and keep on top of keeping them like that. I find she actually plays with the things once they neat
Once I've done all that I am going to vow to do five minutes in the morning to make bed in there, draw curtains and do a quick tidy round. Then when I tuck her in before I go to bed I will do another five min tidy - that way I think I can keep on top of it.
A quick vacumn and dust once a week should then be ok.
Feel tired already!......wish me luck

The simple solution to all your problems is to ask yourselves if you like living in squalor and do you like your family living in squalor ? And remember how much housework you'll have to do if you have to call the doctor in an emergency
runs away and hides.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I am loving this thread - as many have said already 'it could be me!' I give the impression of being organised and, to a degree I am especially at work. However, I spend more time reading about how to be organised than actually doing anything
I have an OH and an 8yo son, work p/t and have just (well, 8 months ago actually) completed a p/t degree.
My 'advice' to you would be:
1 - be less hard on yourself. As has been said you are achieving lots but you focus on what you haven't done.
2 - get help from others that live in the house (and if you manage this, let me in on how I can get help from the others I live with
3 - do a bit every day so you are not faced with a mountain to climb (like eating an elephant one bite at a time)
4 - if you've got something you're not looking forward to doing, try and get it out of the way first.
5 - use a page a day diary to write down what you need to do. That way, you can write in in plenty of time things like 'order birthday card for DD' etc.
6 - remember to reward yourself when you tick off everything on your list. Personally, I like the smug feeling of being in control on the rare occasions I manage to do this.
And I hope your DD has a great birthday - you sound very organised about that!!0 -
i should be writing reports... but i've just researched and booked a short break for the feb half term instead
ignore anything i ever say about organisation and procrastination :rotfl:

That's more of a reality that you think.I know of someone who was less than houseproud shall we say and her chimney went on fire one evening when she lit her coal fire. The Fire Brigade were called, put the fire out (it was only a small contained one) and then proceeded to check throughout the rest of the house. She was mortified and told them thanks very much and tried to herd them to the door but they said they had to check the house thoroughly before they left, especially the room above where the chimney went through.
Cue her very red face when they had to lift several pairs of dirty knickers from the side of her bed upstairs as they were beside the chimney wall and wade through loads of newpapers and rubbish she'd just kinda dumped. :rotfl:
Thank God I have radiators.Herman - MP for all!0
