A while ago someone posted a photo of a tote bag they had made out of an old t-shirt and I can't find it now. Could someone please see if they can find it for me before I go completely mad :o

I have a t-shirt dress that my grandaughter gave me to mend, but I can't invisibly mend the tear in it so I thought I'd make her a tote bag from it instead. Only now I can't find the instructions

I'll be popping in & out today so I'm not ignoring any replies ;)
    Thanks.

Hi don't get on here to post very often, but keep lurking in the background looking at all your lovely makes and ideas. Retiring in the next few months so will then have plenty of time to sew and join in with you if you don't mind!

Have just found this fabric site with some lovely fabric and trims etc,and no delivery charge, some of you may know of it already, but thought I would post the link, won't let me do that cause I'm new,so it's called "myfabrichouse.co.uk"

    Sheila :)

Thought I'd drop in quickly and say hi. I;ve been out of acton about 3 weeks, had my kitchen refitted, then half term then decorating said kitchen. I did manage to do a bit of cross stitch whilst I was away but no stitching. Although I do have to confess to buying a metre of "day of the dead" by Alexander Heath (?) to make a padded notice board for the kitchen. Oh yes and some blue fabric to make myself a dress.

I haven't made a dress (or any clothing) for 20+ years so following a pattern might be tricky. I may be asking some really stupid questions soon. Got to sort out my spare room into a sewing room first. The kitchen fitter left me a piece of working surface and had cut it so that I have one piece thats 1000mm long and one 600mm long. The intension is to fix it to the wall so that the smaller piece flaps down to get access to the wardrobe. When it's open I will have a space 1.6m long to work on. Really excited about getting the room sorted but need to finish the kitchen and get the house back to normal before I can start another messy project.

I have a couple of questions to ask if I may:

    1. Has anyone used one of the really small portable sewing machines, they are currently selling for about £15 in Dunelm? If so would they be any good for sewing quilting blocks whilst I am on holiday (we go to a caravan in the middle of nowhere).

    2. What do you use an overlocker for (sorry for the really stupid question- I know I could google it but thought one of you lovely ladies would answer in simplistic terms).

    Thanks all.

As far as I know, an overlocker is used for neatening seams. If you look on the inside of some clothes, they'll be sewn together at the seam and then sort of zig-zag stitched over the ends, so you can't pull those seams apart and they don't fray.

I think they're also used for hems, like a blind stitch on a normal sewing machine but I'm not 100% on that one.
