well my dd nearly 9 made a cushion a few weeks back with my help for cutting out but she did all the sewing.

the fabric is stripey shes not sewn all that together!

anyway ive been offered a janome sew mini through freecycle for her as she wants her own smaller sewing machine:)

we should get it this week she has already said she wants to make favour type bags to put sweets in as thank yous for her friends who will be at her 9th birthday party at the end of june.

but what else can she make to practice on her machine.

I'm scared! 10 years ago I did loads of sewing, I used to make dance costumes in lycra and national costumes, which involved loads of research and sewing. (think those cute little dolls you bring home from your hols abroad wearing big skirts and puffy blouses etc)

Earlier this year my son rang and asked if I could alter some bridesmaids dresses they had got for their wedding, yes I said.

Now I am scared, not done much sewing in the past 10 years and scared that I won't be able to do it.

Please give me reassurance that once they are standing there in front of me that it will be a case of pin and take in! and it will all come flooding back to me:D

    I reckon it will, Dazi!

I'm very, very angry tonight. I'm making a dress to wear to my friend's wedding on Friday and it's not going so well. I've unpicked about 6 seams and then put the iron on too hot and it's melted some of the fabric. Grrrrrrrrr...

dazi - Im sure it will be like riding a bike - you must have been very good before to do what you did - so just give it a bit of apractice on some spare fabric and then go for it hun - believe in yourself
nykied - you know hun - why not get some sleep - step away from the machine and come back tomorrow when you are feeling less wound up - all that unpicking and now the melt - time for some rest me thinks - sure you will suss it tomorrow when you are fresher!

HMO - wow bet she is really proud of herself and quite rightyly so - that cushion is fab - what about progressing onto a plain book bag with one strap - keep showing us her makes

    and
    pennib
wow oh wow wow woww - I can only just hope and dream to maybe do something half as good as that - my word you must feel truly delighted at the result - it is totally awesome - have serious love thing going on here with your quilt!

  • I forgot to say that i took pics of the dress and that was sufficient for them to see that i had actually made something for the birthday girl. Apparently the needle shuttle race problem is a common problem with the machine i have (Singer 1507) no-one knows how the hell to fix it. . . ah well back to the hand sewing xx

Hi chocolate truffle and welcome to the thread!

If you google free fabric samples you should get quite a few come up. I've had them from a few different places in the past but they vary in size quite a lot.

http://www.curtainshack.co.uk/freefabricswatches.php who do lovely fabrics and quite large samples.
http://mto.lauraashley.com/shortlist go to the products and click add sample to basket. (i got confused the first time lol)

Pennib - that quilt is so lovely, you have put a lot of hard work into it, well done xx

Ginger - thanks for the list of free samples, I want to send off for some as well xx

Hmo - your daughter is going to grow up like her mother, her cushion is lovely. How about pencil cases (can learn to put a zip in quite easily) or ipod case, phone case that kind of thing, cover for notebook, pe bag xx

Dazi - just take your time with the dresses, I am sure it will all come back to you once you make a start xx

Nykied - hope you get the dress sorted, probably tiredness didnt help, its the kind of thing I would do when tired. My thing usually is to try to unpick a seam too quickly and then tug it in a temper and the fabric would rip. Dont know how many times I have done that xx
