hmo, your daughter's cushion is lovely. Well done to her.

My grandaughter started with sewing lavender bags. Just rectangles or squares to start with, stuffed with toy stuffing (all I had at the time :)) and dried lavender and a ribbon hanging loop, then she progressed to heart shaped. Now she adds lace edging and buttons etc.

She inherited her other grandmother's machine, but is always wanting to try my new one (present last Christmas from all my family:)) for her projects. She's 13 next month and last year made her Mum a Buttercup bag with only a little help from me. She now has orders for more from her Mum's friends!

thats fantastic i bet she and you are so proud i think it doeas all children good to have a hobby especially one that you can see some results from at the end.

my dd is 8, 9 at the end of june i cut the fabric for the cushion just simple envelope style but she pinned and sewed.

she also sewed the felt flowers but i added the buttons using my machine for her.

mines only 11 months old electronic easy to use with start/stop button so dont need a presser foot.

the Janome weve been promised uses a foot but i think she will be fine with it.

i am going to give her a piece of fabric and let her try out its stitches i think it has 7 or 8 the basic ones you need.

she can always use mine to add decorative stitches if she wants to
  • Hi can I say hi:j

I haven't sewn anything for ages but I got the sewing machine out this week and had a trip to fabric warehouse (omg I love fabric shopping!!) and I've made a start making some bunting for my dd for her 1st birthday. It started out as going to be a quick job to make some bunting for the garden but instead I've taken my time and made some with her name on for her room. I'm sooooo pleased with it & proud of myself!

I just wanted to share :o hope you don't mind.

I think children are better with a foot control rather than a button as they are able to stop the machine quicker. My Brother innovis 20 has the option to use either the button or the pedal, and I still struggle with stopping the machine quickly using the button. It's probably just what I'm used to over the years, but I'm always mindful of my grandmother's story. She was a dressmaker and used to tell the story of when she first left school in about 1914 she worked in a sewing factory operating a sewing machine. She managed to sew the needle right through her fingernail  as she couldn't stop the machine quickly enough. Whether this was just a story to make me more aware of the machine or not I don't know, but it's a story I told my children and now tell my grandchildren. It certainly makes them respect that it is a piece of machinery they are using, just as their Dad's/Grandad's bandsaw or lathe are.

Oh such pretty photos on this page. Just love that quilt! I have had a lovely day with DD in Hobbycraft. I won a £100 voucher so we had great fun spending it. We each have new sewing boxes, a large cutting board and cutting wheel to share. We got lots of fabric, wadding, filling, interfacing etc. We choose mostly pink and green fabrics to make bags and some other craft projects. I will get DD to help me upload some photos later of our stash. I just popped inot say that we found a few bargains. They had very pretty large fabric covered sewing boxes reduced to £5.70 from £19.99. They were a pink fabric with cherries on. We also thought one of their fabrics was a bargain. It was red cotton with a choice of black or white large polka dots at £2.25 a metre! I bought a metre of each, though not sure what to do with it yet.

Lvsue - I have sewn through my finger twice before, once at school where they rushed me to hospital to have it removed and bandaged up and again about 15 years ago when my eldest two were smaller. This time I should have gone to the hospital to have it checked as they tell you it can be dangerous but I got my son to pull it out with the pliers. Makes me cringe now thinking about it and how I could have got infected afterwards but I am still here. If ti ever happens to anyone else though you should get it checked out.

LVSue, my mum and grandmothers all worked in tailoring and had many tales too about fingers been sewn through, so its v true and def a good warning eek!

Prudent, Ooh let loose in Hobbycraft with a £100 voucher - happy days!

Pennib, wow your quilt is so gorgeous!
hmo - aw the cushion is lovely and so glad your DD is interested in sewing.

Did lots boring alterations yesterday - had a pile of clothes that all needed attention, but I'm glad I did them all, inc the horrendous job of shortening the sleeves on a lined jacket (charity shop, brand new from M&S in cream wool, billy bargain :j). Not sure if its just me but why are all the coats and jackets I buy too long in the sleeves? I must have short arms :rotfl:

Anyhoo I have made a new sock monkey, my DD aged 21 has claimed her :D
