quick question please ladies, i'm making a patchwork quilt for my baby. so he can lay on it and kick his legs , use in cot etc . i've previoucly made a patchwork throw and used 2 oz wadding, but i feel this is a bit thin for a baby one.

which wadding would be better 4 or 6 oz, i apperciate 6 is gonna be thicker, but is it harder to work with, would it be too thick would a 4 be better ?

the room where baby is most likely to use it has a carpet floor and a nice thick rug, instead of a hard wood floor, where definatly thick the quilt the better.

I don't know about the oz but I know I saw a massive difference in the quality and thickness between using 2oz polyester wadding and the thicker quilting waddings (I used the Quilters dream green one it is made from recycled plastic bottles! :D) It was much sturdier than I think it would have been with the 2oz polyester stuff

Now, now, don't start leading me (even further) astray ;), I have nowhere to hide stuff at present.

Very good hart. You're further ahead than I am. When I first thought to start it in May, I thought I'd do the other one first. I hadn't accounted for the amount of time off the kids have had in April. I suppose I'll just have to do the 2 simultaneously although I have a feeling that working with the newer stiffer fabric will be easier than working with the old duvet covers.
Now I have worked out how to cut straight edges using my mat and cutter, I think life will be easier as I can then just whip a strip off (Yeah, it really is that easy Kaz  :rotfl:).

I like working nights for the same reason although I keep telling the little guys that it's so that I'm home for them after school ;). Are you sure we can't tempt you to quilt along? Go on. In fact, as you're irshgirl, treat yourself to a Father Ted's housekeeper style "Oh go on, go on, go on. Go on!"

I had to start early because of my hand op but I did those 2 on the same day :) They are easy to do but I need to make sure I cut the pieces more accurately as some have not matched as good as they should :o
I have not got around to doing any more yet as like you and irishgirl I too work 5 evenings (also Thursday and Friday day time) I tend to forget (or rush) the houswork and cut out my fabric for what ever project Im doing one day then do bits each day :o I sew most of Saturday as OH cooks that day :D. I would love to give up work and just sew or paint (I have just been painting some hooks I have made from recycled wood :D)

jcr I only ever used 2 or 4oz wadding so not sure how thick 6oz would be to sew but you could hand tie places on the quild to keep it in place :) I like using Hobbs as it is ready measured but a bit pricey so I only buy it for special quilts :o
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

Love the bag! As for the magnetic clasp, it looks great but I know what you mean about it ripping off if you keep using it. The first bag I made is the same, but I tend to put the edge of a fingernail in between the clasp bits and open it that way.

I always cut a bit of heavyweight interfacing to put directly behind each end of the clasp before inserting it and then a little bit of 2oz wadding as well before I fix each side in place and Ive never had one rip on me yet. Not sure if you do that or not so just thought Id mention it just incase you didnt. x

Edit: Sorry just read the rest of the remaining thread and see that the lovely Sue has already said the same thing (sorry Sue!)

Sharon, that gingerbread fabric is soooo cute!!

MissPixie :D I love your bag :D when I use the magnetic fasteners I iron a small square of interfacint on the wrong side of the fabric then I make the cuts to poke clasp through, it hold it better and no fear of ripping the fabric when you open the bag :D

I do, and I also sew some more fabric in as well, as instructed to in this tutorial: http://www.warehousefabricsinc.com/blog/how-to-insert-a-magnetic-snap-into-a-bag/ but my first bag just doesn't feel very secure

Hi, we had a lovely day at the Spa, I didnt get back until 6pm. Am incredibly tired but relaxed. I shall be off to bed soon. Some Purple lining has arrived via an Ebay order. So I can do lots more with my purple fabrics from an earlier bag etc, and the skirt I dicected too!
But I havent had time to use my sewing room at all this week, alas, and doubt I will for the rest of the week now.!
Twin2 has arranged for us to see the boys tomorrow morning, and all her contacts till the adoption. Then my Parents are just back off of holiday so I am calling in to see them on the way back. On Friday its time for Biggest of Mooloo. There is a concern about her baby so we are going to the hospital to have a scan or something done, as the baby is only a few weeks off of full term. She finishes at work on Friday. But the midwife today thought that the baby may be in a different position, wasnt sure what was head or bum, and then thought there were legs up by the head.! So we hope that things will just be for peace of mind, but she wants her mum with her.
So I doubt with all the extra driving my arm will be up to any sewing.

I am loving all the makes, and am so itching to be doing things too!. Hopefully next week I will get more time.I do have a jobcentreplus interview on Wednesday morning now, and the boys the Thursday, so my days are starting to fill up again! Will I ever get time to myself? When the new baby comes it will be even more hectic! eek.
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.

Your patchwork looks perfect enough from where I'm sitting Hart!

Sharon the gingerbread fabric is really sweet. What are you going to do with it?

Here are some cards that I made today. I have painted the backgrounds and then I sewn images on the top.

I have just been checking up on my blogs & the lovely Dana, who used to be a regular in here, has a blog post all about choosing wadding here
I personally like to use cotton cotton/poly blend but it can be ££££
