You see loads of cantilever sewing boxes at car boot sales. I think I paid £2 for mine a few years ago and I've probably seen at least a dozen since.

I saw one years ago - full of lots of goodies. The stall holder wanted £4 but I wasnt into sewing then so I didnt buy it! Have never seen one since :(

I had a go at making some bunting a while ago but it was despatched to back of drawer. :o Maybe I will have another go at it and see if there is enough room to put a backing on as I cut the fabric a bit small.

    Love the bunting!

I am getting very frustrated I know the skirt I want to make because I have it but I can't find anything to show me how to make it lol. The closest I have found is this: http://www.daciaray.com/?p=334
But I want to do the back panel as one piece so the skirt is made from two pieces of fabric with a zip on the hip and a button on the waist band. All the gathered skirts I find are elasticated and I really don't want to make an elasticated one but I am getting tempted now because I don't have a clue how to gather my skirt :( I haven't cut anything because I don't want my skirt to end up very square and all the tutorials seem to use rectangles which I am sure must turn out odd..

Tried to post earlier but it wouldn't let me. Anyway, now I'm back with a question.
I'm making DD a pettiskirt. I have made the top layer from satin and I'm trying to now sew the first layer of shirred chiffon (try saying that after a few drinks!) onto the satin. For some reason, the machine is really struggling. The thread kept snapping and in the end the needle snapped. We had family around so I ended up putting the machine away. I'll change the needle in the morning and try to do some more but can anyone think why this is happening? Is it because the layers are too thick? It is quite thick.
Would be very grateful for any tips and advice from you lovely ladies.
Spent £41.32 in fabric land. Bought 4x 4 FQ's, 2m skull fabric for DD and the stuff to make her skirt. The skirt may be the death of me though :D

  • Hello again, thanks for such a friendly welcome! I have finally got out the pattern my mum got me (Simplicity sewing for dummies lol!) and have got as far as cutting out the fabric. dd6 is v excited and helped a little bit. It took us ages. I told you I was a complete novice! I need some proper dressmaking scissors. The ones I used tonight were blunt. DH says we could go and get some tomorrow so I can finish the skirt :D

    P.s. Penni I love the bunting :)
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

well done, yes a good pair of scissors is vital i think for dress making i also have and use a rotary cutter alot espeically for home decor, having said that i did use it for the striaght cuts on the little white dress and top i made over the weekend.

Try searching for a Dindl Skirt or maybe a gathered A line skirt pattern. This maybe what you're looking for?

Hi - I have been sewing for ever. When I was a (probably rather odd) 10 year old I made a tennis dress, and over the years have sewn hundreds of garments. I would find the free patterns based on rectangles really difficult, and wonder whether you might have more success buying a 'proper' pattern and starting from that. You could look out for sales eg all McCalls are currently half price here:
    http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/Skirts_and_Pants.html

    and Simplicity patterns here:
    http://www.sewingworld.co.uk/Simplicity_Skirts_and_Trousers.html

Once you have made a skirt you like you won't look back.
