Thank you both, maybe I am being really dim but when I read about tying I just didn't get it at all I read it like 4 times and other articles and it just isn't clicking lol.

My quilt is very small so would fit in my machine :) I really need to get a vanishing marker at some point! Do you think masking tape would work the same? I would test it on a scrap first obviously but it might be enough to help me machine sew in straight lines.

Do I have to use bias? I don't have any apart from white which might not look nice and don't have enough fabric to make some :( I thought once I had turned out I could top stich round the edge but I am not sure now if that will be okay with the squares.

when i made this quilted runner i used the edge of the rectangles as a guide for my foot and just did striaght lines that way, then down the long edges i used a wavy stitch i have on my machine but set at as long as i could and again followed the edge of the fabric, this would also work with a big zigzag stitch too.

as for binding do you have any fabric left if so cut them to double the finished width you want and sew them together in a long strip and use that, thats what i did with the runner if you look you will see i used all the different coloured strips from the fabric joined together you can see in the photo

You see loads of cantilever sewing boxes at car boot sales. I think I paid £2 for mine a few years ago and I've probably seen at least a dozen since.
Oh dear, here we go again.

    Lovely sewing box hmo.

I too was given one for free, but from my MIL. It is quite a big one on legs, but rather lovely too.

She got it for me from the effects of a dear friend of hers who had died (102!!). The family didn't want most of her stuff, so my wonderful MIL thought I would like it!! I had met her friend quite a few times over the years, a wonderful woman and pretty fit until the last few weeks of her life. She only decided to stop playing golf at 94!

I will post a piccie when I have it in my temporary sewing/crafting room. I going to use DS1's room while he is at Uni, so have until July to get a few things made. By then I might have my shed sorted...:D!

You dont need to use bias binding - here are two good tutorials - crazymom and Redpepper

But the way that you are making your quilt, I dont think you need to worry about binding anyway.

Most of my quilts have been quilted "in the ditch" which is when you just follow the seams.

the first one is the way i did my table runner binding, i used all the colours from the runner and joined them as shown to make my binding

i made a headband to match the white dress from yesterday and she loves it and tonight ive made a variation of the dress i posted yesterday.
    summertop-238x300.jpg

i made it an age smaller, shortened the length and left off the bottom section hem, so its a top.

ive used ribbon instead of the fabric strap and i think it will look good with some white shorts i bought her recently.

this one only took me about 20mins if that to make. i love this pattern i can see i will be making several dresses/tops this summer in various fabrics.

this one was made from about 1/2 meter of fabric we bought ages ago to make headbands and never used so came in handy

As I am forever buying fabrics on ebay. :o My guiltypleasure at the moment. Stocking up for my launching my sewing business soon.! Whats the name you use on ebay and I will take a look and see if there is anything there I might want to add to my stash.!

I finally got round to selling some fabrics and patterns on ebay, and having treated myself to a rather fab Marcy Tilton skirt and trousers pattern in the vogue.com sale, realise that the linen I sold for not enough would be just perfect for the trousers. VERY RUDE WORDS.
