I'm doing the quilt along on crazymomquilts' blog. It was her first quilt along from November 2007. I may actually redo this square as I'm using old duvet covers of DD's and DS's. They are all polycotton but I would prefer to use cheap fabric which I was only going to charity bag anyway. That way I can get to grips with using the machine and the cutter etc before I do her star quilt along.
I realised that I may have struggles though soon as I only have cms marked on my cutting mat and she measures in "s. I have been picking up some bits of cotton along the way and think I now have enough but it's not all pretty. I only have 1 piece which is patterned the others are all plain.
My sister will get some fabric from her local fabric shop when she goes there as she only paid £3.99 per 4 fat quarters. Pretty decent price for pretty patterns huh?

I never use the markings on the cutting mat. I only use my ruler.

I am glad you said that Tamster because I was hoping it would be okay to just rely on my ruler for markings because my cutting mat is only cms as well but it was so much cheaper than any others I have seen it was worth it!

You should see the state of my old crafty desk that is now my dressing table I use to do a lot of art work with craft knives and wire and pliers and looks like it has been hacked to pieces! I thought it would be best to keep the little desk in my craft room safe so I can still do anything inolving paper on it because you can't even write on a piece of paper on the old desk now without it coming out all bumpy and full of holes woops..

Or two longer slits so that the full strap can go hrough and then velcro to close it? If you have any idea what I'm on about! :rotfl:

I do-thanks for that. And I need to get some velcro anyway because I'm making some "bean bags" to attach to serving trays to make lap trays. My polystyrene baalls arrived today and I got some lovely trays from tesco the other day for £3 each-just need to find something strong enough to stick the velcro to the plastic tray.

DH is working tomorrow so I'm going to get stuck in...ironing and cutting patterns and fabric tonight.

Hope you can get some good advice on a machine :D if not we are all here to help :D
When I 1st started sewing I wanted to make so much (still do :rotfl:) but I had to start with a basic tote bag as I had not sewn since school (I made some Bay City Roller trousers so now you know how long ago that was :rotfl:) and Im glad I did as it has given me the confidence to get on with my machine and work my way up to bigger things :D

Thanks Hart. Those trousers must have needed a good bit of fabric :rotfl:Have you made anything tartan since?

The machines at the craft fair were all scary computerised ones that seemed to be able to embroider by themselves Harry Potter-style. My little sis got a basic Brother machine from Argos and she seems to like it. I'll look back on the thread for any other machine recommendations.

:rotfl:The trouser's turned out horrid, I had to use a normal pattern and crop it. The fabric I had was a nasty crimpene type stuff, the sewing teacher was no help back then and I never wore them. I only did them under protest as the teacher said I had to make an item of clothing and back then I only wanted to embroider :rotfl: I think that put me off sewing then till now.
I met the Bay City Rollers (well 3 of them) when I was 28yrs when the came and did a dance at our small village hall :rotfl: talk about desperate :rotfl: it was good though :rotfl:

Wasn't it good though that we had "sewing teachers", my daughter who is 15 can't believe that we were actually taught how to sew at school lol
