basically you want a 3 layer sandwich: back of quilt (sheeting will do if youre being frugal!!) inner layer which is wadding (wool, cotton or acrylic depending on how much you want to spend and some use fleece) and the top which is the bit you have made by patchworking! You "baste" (secure the 3 layers togeather - go from middle outwards) the quilt and then sew togeather before finishing the edging...hth!0 -
thank you hun - the topper Ive done is wider than a single quilt - probably half as wide again so please anyone what would you put in the middle I presume it should only be one piece so what is that wide?????? Thank you xxxxx
When I did my quilts I was unsure what size I need so I brought this http://www.gonetoearth.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=793
I got mine from Ebay for £10.99 + £2.50 P&P
I easily does a single quilt and is nice to work withGetting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a timeand Love sewing

the wadding stuff you buy is much wider than standard fabric widths. I think 90 inch is standard for the cotton stuff. But you can carefully but the two edges together and then zig zag stitch the pieces together (dont overlap the pieces or you will get a hard ridge)
The poly wadding is only a few pounds a meter, the cotton or cotton/poly blend can be £8-£12 pm!! Fleece is also meant to be good but you have to be careful not to stretch it as you sew. Also I read on a blog about someone using an old woolen blanket that they bought in the CS - bet that makes a lovely cozy quilt!
I bought extra wide (120 inch) cotton/poly wadding for all my quilts as i could get 2 quilts out of the width so much less wastage & less meterage than the 90 inch
Also make sure that you de-fluff your machine after each sewing session when using wadding - the fluff in my machine had felted itself!
I have been on here loads the last few days because all my family are in NZ for my cousins wedding and I keep going into my FB account to get updates & photos & then I think "just have a quick peep in the sewing room whilst I am on the PC" lol (should really invest in a new smartphone - my phone is too old for internet lol)
If anyone is interested, the guest book & card that I made for my cousin is on my homepage.0 -
Ooo Tamster that reminds me I got a wool blanket from a CS
I got it cheap as it was listed as a dog blanket lol I washed it and there is nothing wrong with it so I could try using it in my next quilt

I got extra wide wadding but mine is a double plus drape to floor! Wadding really depends how much you want to spent tbh - I get cotton cos its nice and heavy but then it is alot more expensive - for non heirloomy quilts Ill try an acrylicy one! As someone else said you can get narrower bits and sew togeather....a how to is here-assume you can use the same process for blankets, fleece etc...

Afternoon everyone - I have put some pics on my blog of my finished denim quilt. I am quite pleased with it now although it is quite heavy. I need to get my sister to have a look and see if she thinks it would be suitable for one of her daughters rooms or not as dont want to give them out and they dont like them or something. I will just try to sell it if they dont want them and make something else instead.0

Amazing how fast it comes when you do it regularly; last time I'd leave it for months so this way is so much more satisfying and despite being much smaller squares think Ill finish the top within a month. Will now need to hunt for stencil for the top as didnt think I'd need one that soon lol!! For people debating whether to do a quilt my advice is go for it! Would start simple and with fairly large squares.
My next one will be a girlieish one for single bed and am wondering if anyone fancies a quilt along? Am happy to find pattern etc and do simple instructions if that would help the trepedacious! Am by no means an expert (only #2 after all!) but would love for people wondering sbout doing a wuilt but feeling a bit scared to feel the same satisfaction that Im getting at the moment! Let me know what you think!! It wouldnt be for at least a month so pleanty of time for people to hunt fabric etc...:)
Does anyone have a tried and tested pattern for a fabric doorstop?!
Id definitely be up for a quilt a long if no one minds that Im a total dipsh*t when it comes to understanding it. My layer cake arrived today and I bought a metre of co-ordinating fabric to go with it (although not sure what to do with it yet - despite so much help from everyone.) I think quilting is a bit like geography for me. I can read up about it but it never sinks in!

Ive missed the last page and a half of posts so will no doubt be back once Ive read them.
Also want to say a huge thank you to my dear friend Hart who sent me the most adorable fabric jewellery/ring tray today. Its gorgeous and made from that adorable waffle fabric that she has. Thanks again Sue. xx (I would post a piccie but my OH has nicked my memory card from my camera)0 -
