When I did my "finishing your first quilt" course, I was the only one not to even attempt to handquilt as I don't really do any hand-sewing if I can help it. I even machine-stitched all my bindings. (and I am afraid to say - I repair my hems with wonder-web) blush!
You can buy quilting thread in most of usual habadashery places. I know gutterman do it. But the coating comes off if you use it in the machine & can !!!!!! it up. You need a special machine quilting/embroidery thread if machine sewing. The teacher also used recommended a special wax stuff that you can run the thread through.
The Amish aim for around 10 stitches per inch and some of the historic quilts have 18-20 stitches per inch!!! I think an Amish 3 yr old is probably better at hand sewing than me lol!:rotfl:
How funny - i think i was censored by Martin lol:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
i really don't remember which word I used - I know I have a tendency to overuse the !, but I have never used them to replace a word before. And I am not one for swearing maybe I used the bug word...really can't remember though!

10 stitches per inch.....will have to get tape measure out, dont think I have that many.....ooer does that mean I will have to unpick the Whole lot!!! (not) I was looking at the quilting needles and they seem very short to me. I got the longer one!
So you need special quilting thread for the machine as well?
I find hand sewing theraputic, with my feet up, tv on,blazing fire, hot chocolate....bliss!0 -

When my grandmother was apprenticed, the first 'proper' sewing she was trusted with was handsewing the channels that the ribs were threaded into on boned bodices. She was told to do 12 stitches to the inch, and if she dropped below 11 it was ripped out and she had to start again!0 -
Pennib, lovely quilt, I really like the little houses. I use quilting thread on my quilts as its a lot stronger than normal thread so you can pull it and get the layers to go together better.
I have started doing two more cushions like my brothers one for each of my sisters as one of them was begging me to make her one too.0 -

well spent the eve doing squares and have used all my plain blue ones so will cut more tomorrow!! Amazing how fast it comes when you do it regularly; last time I'd leave it for months so this way is so much more satisfying and despite being much smaller squares think Ill finish the top within a month. Will now need to hunt for stencil for the top as didnt think I'd need one that soon lol!! For people debating whether to do a quilt my advice is go for it! Would start simple and with fairly large squares.
My next one will be a girlieish one for single bed and am wondering if anyone fancies a quilt along? Am happy to find pattern etc and do simple instructions if that would help the trepedacious! Am by no means an expert (only #2 after all!) but would love for people wondering sbout doing a wuilt but feeling a bit scared to feel the same satisfaction that Im getting at the moment! Let me know what you think!! It wouldnt be for at least a month so pleanty of time for people to hunt fabric etc...:)
Does anyone have a tried and tested pattern for a fabric doorstop?!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -
