Sorry everyone - my thanks button isn't working.
Thanks to the Surprisingly Senior and Important Person in the cathedral I do now have a prepared answer. He just took the rug from under me (especially by not washing the nightshirt!)
It's historically interesting, but infuriating, that the people who can and do sew, right up to the women in the ateliers in Paris, are so little thought of, while the designers are thought so important.0 -
I used to have a business many many years ago, when the kids were small, and although I had a rate, and it was "posted" on my door. Lots of people used to think I would just do thiers for less, etc. My prices were already rock bottom, and I worked myself into exhuastion. I used to do the repairs for the drycleaners, and they would deliver what ever was brought in that day and expect it back the following day, at 9am no matter how much there was, and with no regard that I may not have thezips etc or the correct coloured threads! Then they would charge 3 tmes more to the customer.
I enjoy making at my own speed now, what I feel like making. But the cost of my time is not factored in, at the moment.
I dont want to ever have an alterations side to my sewing again! It really burnt me out for years and years where I wouldnt sew at all.!
On another note two of my bags on ebay sold yesterday. It covered the cost of the fabrics, andthe costs of ebay and Paypal fees!.When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

Here ya go...some progress at least! Much of this eve spent unpicking and I'm now proceeding at a slower and more careful pace!!
Thankfully Im not good enough for people to ask me to do stuff but would say that I couldnt as just too busy but can recc a very good place locally who will do seams etc!
Ah what a pain! I don't bother unpicking unless it is really bad- I just tell people that it is part of it's charm lol. Also once quilted it is even harder to spot.
I really like your colours. My frontroom is blue & brown/beige. but I cannot seem to find baby blue anything - everything is teal atm. I am desperate to make some cushions & curtains.
When I did my beginners quilting class, we were shown to pin through the seams. And have the seems going in opposite directions to reduce the bulk. If one block is a bit bigger than the other, you put the bigger side down first and it corrects itself - something to do with the feed dogs.
The Dh drives me mad because he wont set a price & then gets the hump when he recieves less than he thinks he deserves lol! He expects people to be mind readers!:rotfl:0 -

batting is the American term for wadding so they are the same thing. You can buy cotton, polyester or a blend of the two. The poly comes in different thicknesses.
fusible wadding is what they use when making handbags, you can iron it one to fabric like you do with interfacing.
I havent used it but know that Pootle has. I imagine it to be a bit sturdier than interfacing but give a softer finish0 -

Hello all - I have been a reader on this thread now for a few weeks and the inspiration has totally whet my appetite to get back into my crafts. Up until having my twins 3 1/2 yrs ago I had the time (and a huge craft room) to do all of my 'stuff' and I also did some crafting and textiles courses at the local art college, obviously I don't have the big craft room now and most of my gear is in the loft but we do have a small room which OH thought was going to be a 'male den' (having three ladies in the house;)) but oh how wrong he was:D as I am slowly getting my gear back out again.
Did anyone watch the programme on TV a few years ago about the House of Chanel I think with Karl Lagerfeld? I noticed how little he seemed to do and thought at the time how unfair it was that the ladies doing all the work were making the designs, he even put one of his own dresses on the model back to front and shouted at them because it didn't fit.
Anyway - look forward to joining you when I have something to contribute, evenings are spent doing chores rather than nice things once the girls are in bed!:)0 -
Welcome jamsandwich
I so pleased you have joined this group of fabric addicts :rotfl:
MoolooIm so pleased your bags sold, you must be very happy
ISOMyour sqaures are coming on great, just keep going
I prefer mine to be a little out, its part of the handmade look
I have used the fusable fleece in my frame purses, it just gives it a nice bit of padding without bulk and you can iron it straight on the fabric. Most of the time I just use bog standard 4oz wadding from Ebay for my quilts as I have only made them for myself as a topper for my bed (I get too cold at night lol) and on the back of the sofa.
Ive come on to ask if anyone has done this bag? http://www.allaboutyou.com/craft/Recycle-Clothes-Creative-Idea-Bag/v1
Im trying to do the patern but I can't see the measurement for the base and it wont go any bigger (note to self get an eye test :rotfl:)Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a timeand Love sewing
