I agree with you about the top corner being too cluttered. Maybe taking either the triangle off or the long purple bit might un-clutter it.

I'm not too sure about the dark blue bits either, I'm not sure that they sit well with the other patterns and light colours.

I'm probably not the best person to ask though. Sethsgran will be along soon, she'll have ideas :)

Tamster I just looked at your blog and love it...and Im almost tempted to "cosy up to you" for more how to's;) I think we're in "the same region" and I could use a teacher like you for DS.Also, that piccy of your boys made me think of my own:)

ahh thanks polkadot - i dont have many followers and I haven't been very good at keeping my blog up-to-date. So it is always nice to have comments. It is also difficult to not give away too much detail about myself in the blog as I have to be conscious of my professional status!
  • hart thanks for that  very helpful ive bookmarked it

cheers rufusdog will do strips of squares then sew them together :D

i am doing it by hand, is that mad ? just i can sew straighter by hand then with a machine :o

I "chain pieced" mine (although the ones above are not mine)- you just keep feeding the pairs of squares through the machine, and snip the threads after - saves time & thread:money:

If you havent cut you fabric up then it is even easier to "strip piece". You just sew strips of fabric (usually 3 or 4) together, then cut into rows and sew the rows together. The pics below use quite a few strips but it gives you an idea of what I am taliking about - I imagine that they would be hard to match up. I did 4 strips - sewed all strips into pairs, then sewed two pairs together, then cut into rows.

  • pin the rows through the seams and the patches should match up.

I would just start making it up lol! No matter how long you spend planning it I am sure that you will end up changing it as you go along anyway! I would o the main "body" and the ripples & then pin and play around with the shapes - or ask DD to place them.

and I quite like the solid blue - I thought maybe swap a patterned shape for another solid in that top right section?

Tamster - thats how I did my first quilt with the strips sewn together then cut up afterwards. It wasnt a square patch quilt though it was rectangles. It was so easy to do, and really quick way of doing it. Only trouble I found with it was though was that once done you had to stick with the pieces as they were and didnt have such a good selection for fitting them together if you know what I mean so the patterns are spaced out well. I keep forgetting about this way when I do the quilts now but will have to try it again next time. Think it would be good for one where you need the squares to come in the same order repeated.

I finished the smaller quilt last night, have posted a couple of pics on my blog.

I am sewing the denim squares at the moment. Not sure how its going to come out until its finished. I have been doing some machine emboidery down the sides of the seams that are left from the jeans in some bright colours and then sewing a square of wadding onto the back of each square. Then I am hoping I can just sew the squares together and not need to quilt it, just sew a backing fabric on the back and catch it here and there with some bright coloured buttons. That reminds me, off to ebay to have a look at the buttons xx
