I have done a few patchwork quilts now since starting sewing last year and I found this blog very helpful as she takes you through the very basic squares to makeing more patterns :D

You do a pattern a week so you can build them up for a nice quilt top :D
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

If there's a Dunelm Mill near you, they might have them in there.

If I am doing a quilt which is just made up from small squares I normally sew them into strips first then sew the strips together making sure the seams fit together as I sew.

If I am doing a different pattern then I usually make up blocks and then sew the blocks into strips and then sew the larger strips together.
