Was wondering whether you make the lining up the same as the top then hand stitch it around the edges to the outer bit or if there is another way of doing it? I wont be putting stretchy cuffs on or anything but want to do a zip down the front so it is like a jacket. Will just be using one of his ones he already has as a pattern but dont think he has any that are lined already.
I think you just use the same pieces for the lining.rufusd!!!2 wrote: »Also bought myself a remnant of brown jersey with a gold metallic pattern printed on it to make myself some kind of top. Any tips on sewing jersey? I havent made anything with it for years now and cant remember how to go about it. Think you have to change the needle but what thread to use? And do you need to sew with a stretch stitch?
Thanks a lot, Rufus xx
You will need a ballpoint needle, and use a zigzag stitch - not necessarily a huge zigzag, but just enough for some 'give' at the seams. If you have an overlocker I think you can often make stretch tops just using that - some patterns give the information for it. Tbh I've avoided sewing stretchy material because for some reason my machine just doesn't like it0 -

Edit: Also meant to ask - has anyone been to the Creative Stitches & Hobbycraft day before? Im thinking of going but not sure whether its any good or not or if its more designed for Cross Stitch and jewellery/card making. x
I went to the Brighton one last year and going again this year but there are loads of cardmaking stuff there which doesn't interest me. There are quite a few fabric retailers, buttons, loads of quilty things, habdash stuff but not loads of jewellery as I recall. I'm more dressmaking orientated and theres not much dress making fabric there, mainly quilting cotton.

can someone please give me a kick up the booty - I started sewing last year after spending a life terrified of sewing - dont laugh - I mean terrified - so much so when my son wanted his cubs badges ewn on his uniform - hubby did it - anything needed doing that involved a needle and thread and it either went in the bin or hubby did it - then last year I thought enough is enough and gave it a go - have made a curtain to cover the washer - couple of bags - some patchwork cushions and a big throw for the sofa - still scared but giving it a go - then all of December I was ill with flu combined with starting a new job which I need to do studying for - so tis been a while - I got s super duper new machine for chrimbo but what I am getting to is now I look at the machine and think wow it looks fab but gulp I am too terrified to go near it - and have forgotten everything I was learning - where do I start - what do I make to get me back into it - dont laugh I know I am a kipper but dont know what to do to get back on the bike if you see what I mean0

Find a piece of old scrap fabric and just sew up and down to get the feel of your machine. Try out each of the stitch selections to see what effect they give and alter the stitch length to see how the stitches change. To start with don't worry about making anything. Just play and learn.
I haven't used my machine since last summer as I have been unwell and when I sat in front of it last week I didn't know where to start. I just worked a few lines adjusting the stitch length until I felt happier about using it again.
From the list of things you have made before which gave you the most pleasure whilst putting it together? That may be a good place to start again.
How about making a crayon roll for your son or a pillowcase for his bed.
Stop worrying about the machine, it will work well with you, use all your energy in being creative and planning all the pretty things to make.
Just thought - how about making bunting for your sons room. It's simple and fun to make and looks great when it's finished. You can get some lovely fabrics for boys.0 -
