I like that one too pennib, I like the black borders on it.
I dont draw patterns, I usually just sew diagonal lines from corner to corner or sometimes I cut out paper circles and pin them on and sew round the edge. On the first one I did I sewed around the inside edge of every other patch (it was rectangles). I like the effect of the circles but it is a lot of hard work. I did my brother's quilt using this method and it was a double bed quilt and took ages to do. I used a plate that was big enough to give me the largest size out of a piece of A4 paper. On the one I am doing now I am using small circles but just doing the centre piece like this, the rest I shall probs do diagonal lines.0 -
Pennib I just clicked on the pic to make it large, i love the middles of each square, did you do the embroidery on them? Its really lovely xx0

Rufusdog, Yes, its a cross stitch in the middle A-Z of plants. The banding is dark blue rather than black.
I was thinking of using one of those invisible pen thingy's to mark out a pattern...even if it's only straight lines! Tamster has recommended that I use a quilting cotton. So need to go and have a look on E*bay and see what they've got.0 -

I find the quilting cotton is fab for the hand quilting as it is strong and doesnt tend to fray whilst sewing so it keeps the three layers together with out you thinking the cotton will snap.
I bought one of those invisible pens that you wash away with a little water after. I found it really good to start off with but the nib soon fell out. I took it back as thought it was faulty but the second one did exactly the same. I was trying to draw a straigt line across the diagonal for me to stitch on but as I dragged it along the side of the ruler it just snapped off. I used the second on when I was making a label to go on the back (I embroider the name of whos quilt it is, when I made it etc) but again it snapped off and I wasnt pressing hard. I now use a grey pencil if I need to write and embroider over but on the quilting if I am trying to get a straight line we were taught to use a bodkin or some instruement that is not sharp and "draw" a line along the side of the ruler with it, this will leave a faint crease in the fabric (works best on 100% cottons) that you can follow with your needle and doesnt mark it. Can sometimes be a bit hard to see if the pattern it too much but I find it a good way to do it.0 -
Rufusdog; Thanks for that info. I have an invisible marker (which disappears after a while) and the washable marker. Never had any probs with either. Maybe you got a bad batch if it was bought at same shop? Must remember to do a label for the back on this one.0

Hi all
I used the 505 spray on a couple of quilts I did and it is good because you can pull apart if necessary. I did find however that on a large quilt it was still difficult to keep all layers stretched. I did one quilt using pins and hand quilted it and foud that came out well but it was a smaller quilt.
I ave just found this though:http://www.creativegrids.com/acatalog/info_5_N0567.html and think it might be worth investing in. It is so hard to stop the underneath from scrunching up and spoiling the final quilt.
For patterns I have used some templates and a vanishing pen and the one I have just done I simply practice drawing on paper then just go for it on the quilt. I am pleased with the final results and will post piccie once binding is done.
So far I have done two quilts copying a layout from internet and three that I have made up as I go along. I think that is the fun of quilting that you can do whatever you like once you have the basics.0 -
