I love those dolls they are quite simple and so would be a good first project, good luck.

    Hi all , :)

    Can I join in too?

I've just bought my first sewing machine , a Janome and I've had a play with it today and I'm hooked already. I feel it's so easy to use ... time will tell on that though!

I can't do anything with it YET due to lack of experience and lack of good thread but nonetheless....this time next year I hope to be sewing away.

Can I ask what opinions are on the clothkits dolls as a starting exercise?
http://www.clothkits.co.uk/clothkitty-doll-clothing-special-p-185.html I know they are a tad expensive but seem to be on offer at the moment plus my little girl would love one. :)

BTW what a fab thread this is with some great pictures! I'm looking forward to reading this from now on.

They are very expensive IMHO, had a look at them the other day funnily enough

just did a quick google and found these tutorials:-

Thanks for looking for me Bunny - I've bookmarked all them. I loved the first two in particular

I'll see what OH thinks of the clothkits one for our DD when he gets home.

I just want to get started now !
I can't be bothered updating this anymore
  • I posted on the previous page about my first sewing project, a dress (Burda 7739) and I finished it today! It's made of a navy blue jersey material (navy is my favourite colour to wear) and I love it, it's really versatile and I think I'll get lots of wear out of it! Here are some pics:

Excuse the posey last pic, had to take the photo myself in the mirror in bad lighting but you get the idea. I'll definitely use the pattern again, there's a shirt dress I want to make on there too.

I bought two long t-shirt style maxi dresses in the matalan sale today for £3 each - one is four sizes too big for me, I was buying them to use the nice t-shirty fabric to cut up and make into something else as I wouldn't get that much fabric for £3 anywhere else so I bought the biggest size possible! The other one is my size and a floral pattern and when I tried it on I thought it would look lovely just as a shorter version of what it already is so I'm going to shorten it and keep the excess material to use for something else.

wow. Go you, and that's your first make, it looks perfect Looking forward to seeing your other projects.
Never thought about buying clothes in extra large sizes just for the fabric, good idea will have to keep that in mind when I go to the sales!
  • Saphireeye, your dress looks fantastic and it fits you beautifully. Well done.

Love the dress and good idea too about buying clothes in the sale for the fabric.

I sorted out my craft room yesterday a bit better as it had got to be a bit of a mess over the last few weeks what with other things to do and it being so cold upstairs. I managed to do a bit more sewing on the oriental quilt I am making for my sister as well while up there so feel I have accomplished something today.

My son bought me some fabric for Christmas but I dont know what to make from it at the moment. Its Laura Ashley cotton and there are two pieces both a metre long, both pale green but with different patterns on them. First thing comes to mind is cushions but the colour wont go in any of our rooms. Thinking some kind of top may be but not sure how to work it. I take a size 20 - 22 so need a lot of fabric lol. I dont really use bags that much, just stick to my hand bag and thats it so cant really think of what else to do with it lol.
  • What a great thread!
    Very inspiring,thanks
Taken me ages to read through,by the time I looked at all the books/patterns and the material -OMG,I want them all.
BUT-Already have boxes of stuff, acquired, bequeathed and storing for our craft group ,and some mine.:D
So/sew this must all be sorted, used or chucked before anything else comes in.:o
Made lots of bags, cafetiere cosy, tea cosy as Christmas presents, and a papoose for GDs doll, plus knitted socks, fingerless mitts and a scarf.
More of the same for 2011,so this will be my resolution (but I have always labelled it as an acheivment as it feels better IYSWIM)
