Hi all! A newbie to sewing here! My previous sewing experience was mainly my GCSE Textiles, I did get an A and made a lovely 50's style prom dress but with a lot of direction from my wonderful mum because the school didn't really teach much at all! That was 8 years ago now and have just started university in September and being 5 years older than the rest of my housemates, having a lot of spare time on my hands, having no tv and not being that interested in drinking or clubbing, I've turned to craft. I made some sock monkeys, I knitted my mum a scarf and will probably knit a bit more and now I'm moving my attention to sewing. I come from quite a crafty family, my mum and my nans do everything; knitting, sewing, cross-stitch, card making... you name it. So I've enlisted my mum to help me have a go at making my own item of clothing over Christmas with a view to spending my Christmas money on buying a sewing machine for myself to take back to university with me, my only worry is that it might be a bit noisy in uni accommodation?
We've started working on a dress, the pattern is Burda 7739 and I have to say that reading it is like reading a foreign language! Luckily I have my mum to help 'translate' and then I'm typing up the instructions using less jargon and more words that I can actually understand! So she's telling me what to do and how to do it and I'm doing it, with the hope that if it goes well I will be able to do it again in the future on my own... So I'll probably be around updating you and if it comes to it asking for help, hope no-one minds
I know that it won't be cheaper than toodling off and buying clothes in Primark (or on Ebay, my guilty pleasure) but it will keep me entertained and give me a sense of accomplishment and a break from uni work. Plus, I've read a few blogs where they buy dowdy clothing items from charity shops and make them into something fabulous, so maybe in the future I can aspire to that!
Oh and Merry Christmas everyone!0 -

Hi saphireeye, and welcome to the thread.
I love the dress you're making, you'll have to put photos on when it's finished.
I made a lot of my own clothes when I was your age and although it was probably cheaper than buying, because Primark and Ebay weren't around then, my main reason was that I didn't want to be wearing the same as anyone else. Even if someone used the same pattern it's highly unlikely that they would use the same fabric which is still true today.0 -
anybody know of anywhere selling fab sewing books in the sales??? Got a few for chrimbo but have got some pennies as a pressie too - looking around now0

Thank youIt will definitely be nice to have something that isn't the same as what everyone else has and Primark/Ebay are about the only places I can afford to shop, not Topshop like everyone else in my year, I just can't bring myself to pay £40 for a top! :-/ So making my own stuff will work out cheaper than that and hopefully the things I make myself might stay in one piece better than my Primark stuff which always seems to rip at the seam or lose a button after a few wears! On the Burdastyle website some people had posted up their finished dresses from the pattern and they look great, so am hoping mine is as nice!
I did a little bit more today, sewed up the collar and attached the collar and the facing to the bodice so it's actually starting to look a bit more like a garment now!0 -
Hi everyone - Happy Christmas!
I never quite finished my nieces quilts (slaps wrist) I have 2 quilted & waiting for the binding and one left to quilt. The only thing is that one is wider than the others & my hallway so not sure how i am going to lay it out on the floor to baste it as the other rooms are carpeted!!!
I am going to get the first two finished for New Year and the other one asap.
Did you have a good Christmas??? We nearly didn't have one at all! DH & the kids were all poorly Christmas day and our cooker hob packed up! The pan over-boiled and water got in to it. Luckily we only had the veg to do. We have fantastic neighbours who let us use their hob. Also the oven was on the same circuit and had tripped out but we didnt notice for nearly an hour so the potatoes took about 2hrs to cook in the end!
New Year's Projects - What are yours?
Once I get the quilts done, I have a dress pattern to attempt - Vogue 8631 I bought it in fabricland with 40% off. I have already bought some slinky/shiny chambray/lightweight denim for it. And I also want to make some applique pics like Pennib's. And another Little Cap for my other Little Man.
Right better get myself into gear, I have managed to get my boys DRs appointments at a new "walk-in-clinic" near by, so need to make a move or we will be late!0 -
Well I am in my new house. Hence i have been abscent for a while.
Now I have the glorious task ahead of me, to make curtains for the whole house. To make the decisions on making cushions etc etc all to make our new home work. Then of course I would like to get back into the habit of making gifts for the family etc etc So 2011 is going to be a year of creating for me and making this latest move, my home. (Move no 40 of my life!, and hopefully one of the last!).When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0
