  • I am making a New Year's Resolution to start sewing again. I used to sew everything until my family came along and then what with working full time etc, the years have gone by and the sewing machine gathered dust! I have a massive fabric, patterns & notions stash, so I won't need to spend much to get started. I haven't decided on what to sew yet, so I am going to start with my pile of mending/alterations that never seems to go down and then a much needed tablecloth and curtain linings. Once they're done, hopefully I will be less rusty and ready to start on a garment!

Looking forward to getting to know the sewers on here and seeing what everyone is making.

Hello All, I had a lovely Christmas and now I am ready for a year of making rather than buying.

I went to Newark market last Wednesday and bought many yards of beautiful fabric including some 50% mohair/50% wool which I am turning into a winter coat (cut out this morning). The man had a lot of very nice Italian wool all for £5 a yard, I was in fabric heaven! Also he had old fashioned face cloth which I haven't see for years, that will be a jacket when I have finished my coat.

I am using sewing to get new clothes and also because you can't eat and sew at the same time so hopefully it will help with losing weight too!

Hi, knock knock can I come in??? After months of harping on about should I shouldn't I -will I use it or wont I - my oh came up trumps at xmas and bought me a sewing maching. I have had my first little play today and seems quite easy (I have bad memories of getting shouted at a lot at school and told to just do knitting!!). I dont think I will be making clothes more things for the home (and also a bit on hm cards) and wondered if anyone could recommend any magazines/books that would be good to get me started - I have a CK book (the one with the bag kit) but am thinking will start on something a little easier. Thanks in advance for any help/advice you could give.

    Hi everyone

I read this thread all the time but didnt really join in much last year even though I was sewing non stop throughout the year making presents for everyone. I would like to join in more for this year though. Have already made a start on sewing next years Chrismtas presents as my two sisters want patchwork quilts. Dont have all the fabrics yet for them but had enough to make a start on one of them for the youngests sister, she wants one in red, black, cream and gold with an oriental flavour to it. I managed to pick up some nice fabrics before Christmas on Ebay to start me off, I have a nice size piece in red with some oriental ladies on which I am using as a centre panel and have sewin a black border around the edge. Now I am making some blocks out of other bits and pieces and will try to assemble it as and when I have enough to do the next "round" on it. The finished quilt will be single bed sized.

My other sister just wants one of those scarves that you drape across the end of the bed for a double bed. I have a nice panel for that too for the centre, she wants hers in browns and creams and neutral colours. Havent really thought about how to do that one yet until I finish the first one.

Need some nice ideas for my 4 nieces as to what to make them for next year. They have had something hand made for the last 4 or 5 years and always look forward to what they are getting. This year they had clutch bags made from recycled magazines (not exactly sewing although I did have to sew the rounds together and sew in the zips) and some rag dolls for which I found a pattern in an old magazine. They looked a bit like Tilda kind of dolls with the long heads and skinny bodies etc. Dont know what to do for this year yet, their ages range from 12 to 21 (or will by next Xmas) but I have a few months to think about it while I get on with the quilts.

OH had some hand made shirts and he liked them a lot so I will look out for some more fabric and make him some more for next year. The pattern I bought was really easy to follow. I could even make some short sleeved ones for his birthday in August.

Look forward to seeing what everyone is making, I have photos of what I made for this year on my blog if anyone would like to see, Rufus xx

I've spent some of yesterday and today sorting out my son's clothes....made him 3 new pairs of pjs, and "made" his too short pjs into shorts pjs for next summer, and about 4 pairs of too short jeans and trousers into skater shorts for next year!

I'm so glad he only seems to grow taller rather than out the way-saves a good few quid!

    Hi all , :)

    Can I join in too?

I've just bought my first sewing machine , a Janome and I've had a play with it today and I'm hooked already. I feel it's so easy to use ... time will tell on that though!

I can't do anything with it YET due to lack of experience and lack of good thread but nonetheless....this time next year I hope to be sewing away.

Can I ask what opinions are on the clothkits dolls as a starting exercise?
http://www.clothkits.co.uk/clothkitty-doll-clothing-special-p-185.html I know they are a tad expensive but seem to be on offer at the moment plus my little girl would love one. :)

BTW what a fab thread this is with some great pictures! I'm looking forward to reading this from now on.

I can't be bothered updating this anymore
