Another lovely quilt, your daughter will love it midge61.

Made another brooch they are rather addicitve. It looks nice on a plain jumper/blouse etc. The colours havnt come out as zingy as they are in real life. Hubs made me the logo which also hasn't photographed very well.

My friend did mine for me - she did just what loanranger said.
If you need to alter the length then do that by moving the heading tape rather than fuss about with the hems - never thought about doing that till another poster on her mentioned it!

I have never done them that way and cringe every time my step mum buys ready mades for me to make shorter as they are alsways made so badly and I could honestly make them from scratch in less time!

The last pair the lovely shop assistant had told her to do them from the top I told her I do them from the bottom but she thought she was helping by taking all the header tape off URRRGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Dont just assume that if you need them x amount shorter you just cut x amount off the top of each curtain.
They do whatever they want at the top of the curtain ( they can do because it doesnt show under the tape.) so the length you have on the top is different on each curtain the ones I did were 1.5 inches out to each other then for some unkown reason the header tape that had been removed no longer fitted even though I could clearly see the folds still in the tape, you would think its just a case of puting the tape back on, these ones luckily i tacked it ( which I would never need to do making them from scratch) I was gobsmacked to get to the other end and find the tape wouldnt fit by over an inch!
I would do bottom every time its a lot easier to measure up both of them as far as the hem by holding them together to make sure they are the same length and a lot quicker to do them hem than to reattach the header tape as well.
And she thinks she saves me a job by buying the wrong size ready made lol!
  • Danables that quilt is gorgous! I LOVE your fabric - you have a good "eye" for colour.

And well done on the Advent calander Bunny.

Pootle patchwork is much easier than it looks. There are lots of great tutorials online. I really like http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/ lots of tutorials on there. Or try the Moda Bakeshop.

Midge Your quilt is also gorgous - your daughter will love it. I love the free-motion quilting.

I have FIVE  quilt tops to quilt and now that the wadding has arrived I am actually quite nervous of starting the quilting! I was a bit nosy (sorry) and had a flick through your album - you have made some great stuff. I wanted to know where you got this quilt pattern from as I would like to (attempt) use it on one of my quilt tops.

BTW I ordered my wadding from https://www.asding.com on Saturday, they emailed to say it had been dispatched Monday & it arrived today - excellent service given the weather atm!
  • I mustn't be allowed to link from your album - I was talking about your Heart Cushion with the Heart quilting on it - thanks
  • Thanks Tamster. Thats a great site. Have added it to my favourites. Its just a bit daunting as Ive never done one but they all look so amazing that I reckon its about time I get out of my comfort zone. Cheers again for the link. x

Midge, you have made some lovely stuff! x

Danables, thats fantastic. Absolutely love it!!!
Im gearing myself up to do a hexi quilt at the moment but OH (who knows nothing about sewing) tells me I should just stick to patchwork. Have to say I know nothing about it either so dont have a clue what to do. Is patchwork squares or log cabin easier than hexies? I want to do something like you have done but will do whatever the easiest TBH as getting into new territory. Do you use loads of wadding to quilt it? I have been looking at books on quilting but not sure which to buy yet so a bit clueless as to how to quilt and bind etc. Well done again. Honestly think its fabulous!! x

Thanks pootleflump, I'd imagine hexies would be the most time consuming. This is only my second quilt so im not really an expert but for my first I did squares as I wanted to keep it simple and it was much more straight forward. The xmas one i did is a cheats log cabin as they are all made of 3 rectangles to make a square iyswim! rather then the traditional log cabin design.

If you are machine quilting go for a thin wadding (i prefer cotton) like hobbs heirloom or warm and natural (available on teh cotton patch website)as standard machines dont like loftier battings. There is a fab tutorial for binding on a blog called dont look now, very straight forward and works every time! even shows you how to calculate how many strips you need so you dont waste time making loads.

hi All.. hope you don't mind me joining in :j

I havent sewed for a while but something just recently has made me want to get back to it. I have a need to make a patchwork quilt :j I dont know whether I am actually capable as I am a beginner but i'm gonna give it a shot anyway...

Anyhow, my question was this.. have any of you ever bought/used one of those mini sewing machines? Like the one in Hobbycraft for £19.99?

My sister is getting into sewing and she doesnt have a machine. I would like to buy her one for xmas but I can't afford a full sized one. I have been looking on ebay but no luck

are the mini ones any good at all?

Thank you so much for any help you can give me
