I'll be back once i have caught up on the posts from weekend x x

P.S. Danemi i used my computerised machine to do all the stitching (just incase you haven't been quite convinced to get one yet :-) )

wow thats fab. i've been making felt xmas dec's and keyrings. but i have been using embroidery threads, not the sewing machine. I put a piece of cardboard inbetween the two pieces of felt. i think i might buy some inter facing , but the card seems to be working really well. It is so relaxing isn't it. i love working with felt.

    Hello.
We are trying to sell some curtain material at the moment but we have been asked about how much fabric would be needed for a certain size.
    This is the question:

    Hello
I've got two windows, the smaller is 89" across (measuring the rail) and 90" drop (below the window sill), the larger is 163" across and 108" to the floor. How much fabric would I need to buy in order to do double length pencil pleat curtains?

Please could someone help us with these measurements so we may actually be able to sell some?

My partner lost his job and because he was owed money the material was given as a form of payment!! It is 140cms wide.

Any help would really be appreciated, thanks. :)
Hi you will probably get a faster reply by posting on the sewing forum and you don't need to sign up to post. Sorry I can't help.

    Hi Spiral :D
I had a look at my book and then realised I have the Spring one so still can not help :o but I will buy (oh ok I will ask my OH nicely to buy it for me :rotfl:) the newest mag tomorrow and get back to you :D

Oh Heart, please dont buy the magazine on my account! I know it includes fabric but £7.*? is a lot to spend on a whim on a mag - some Tilda Books aren't much more! (eek, please do first check we aren't talking at cross purposes, lots of things have similar names ect - i had to read back over pages to find the one Craftygranny was talking about in the first place!)

Although, saying that, I just bought some nice green fabric with the justification that my online friend Viv would like some.. so feel free to use me as an excuse if it helps!! :rotfl:

  • Must be something in the air - I have been having bobbin problems all night too!

I bought some new bobbins for my machine (a 1960's Bernina) as I only had the one, had filled one and did a ton of sewing with it but then the thread kept looping and tangling underneath.

I re-threaded the top thread & bobbin and it still didn't work. And I couldn't get the top thread to "catch" the bobbin thread. Then I poked about, played with the tension, pulled out the bit where the bobbin case goes, gave it all a clean. but still had no luck, tried googling but my model is soooo old, I couldn't find anything to help!

Then out of desperation, I put the original bobbin back in & now the machine is working fine! I guess some machines are just plain temperamental... but then mine has an excuse - she is a very old lady lol!

  • Phew, have just finished reading this thread, hope you don't mind if I join in! I now have the most ridiculous list of pattern/fabric/blog/ideas websites, thanks for all of the good ideas! I got a sewing machine as a suprise Christmas gift last year, and my first project was a few pairs of pyjama bottoms which worked out amazingly well! Between house moves and staying with other people etc I haven't done anywhere near as much as I would have liked, but hopefully when we get settled and get the internet back up and running I will get some more projects underway! You all have some amazing items!

    Thanks Sarah,
I have now managed to get the bobbin thread up (with a bit of manual intervention from me) but although the machine runs fine, absolutely no stitches form-Im just left with a line of thread not attached to the material.....aargh why are sewing machines so "difficult"????(its not even a fancymachine-just basic)

My industrial machine does that if the needle isn't in quite right. If I put it in slightly squiffy or too high up it does exactly what you describe. From time to time as well I get problems with my machines objecting to certain threads. If I change to a new thread the problem sorts itself out.

I'm being sent to london for work on monday, and a some of the afternoon is my own. I'm going south of the river in the middle (that's all i was told!), but returning from Euston.

Does anybody know any good fabric shops for quilt fabric (Moda ect) or maybe a good market for general cotton fabric that is still on in the afternoon? (If not, I'll just peruse the V&A or noodle around Camden!)

  • 23rd spiral I grew up in West London, Sounds like you will be around the South Bank area, which I love for wandering about but for fabric shops I suppose you could get the tube a couple of stops to Oxford St, for John Lewis, Liberty and MacCulloch and Wallis http://www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk/ (have never been been but it is meant to be good, expensive but good)

Or for cheap bargains, you want Shepherds Bush Market/Goldhawk Rd, but that is a much longer tube journey. (although not far from Westfields :) ) Walthamstow market (East London) is also meant to be good but I don;t know that area of London and have never been to the market.

If you are travelling from/to Euston you will be quite near Camden.
