wow Tina, you have been busy! and all that with a toothache? astounding!! (:)that's not a word i get to use mutch!) are the ornies machine stitched? if so, do you have to use a special needle? i find hand sewing felt blunts needles quite a bit, and havent thought to use the machine.

Cuddles - awe, he's so cute! i think i know who that might be for! ;)
I have to THANK YOU lots and lots! :T the Puppy Cushion instructions came today. And it's even better than it looked in the little pic i saw - i couldnt see the tree before - i can see that being used seperaly elsewhere too. I LOVE American folk art, and this has that feel. :D And oddly, I've recently been pondering those funny 1/2 triangle stars, and there they are! I can't wait to make it - though it will be pushing my skill level, which isnt a bad thing :j :D I get to go buy some appropriate fabric now, because i think this deserves to be just right. Thank you so much!! :T

Spiral i just used a normal needle on my machine. They only took a few minutes to do each one and now i am becoming addicted! i was trying out a few of the stitches on my new machine so just messing about really but really pleased with them. I have done some more since so i'll post some pics when i get a minute :D

Heya :) I've not been on this thread before but have been told about you from over on the shabby chic thread :)

I posted for some help as I am at the very newest end of beginner in sewing!

I gave into a previous post on here and bought 'sew' by kath kidston and I can't wait to get started... But here's the thing, i've never been taught to sew :( sooo I am after a lot of advice. I would love to make a few of the easier pieces like the lavender bags. Tea towels and bags to go in as Christmas pressies so I am going to have to get my skates on and learn. I basically have nothing ( well apart from material from my crafting boxes).

Does anyone have any advice on a suitable sewing machine. I don't really want to spend a fortune on my first one until I know what I'm doing. I have seen a Argos value machine on their website for £60ish it does have very good reviews but I still don't really know what to look out for. I would love to hear anyones recommendations I don't even have a basic starter sewing kit :s

A shabby chic-er has pointed me in the direction of this lil un from john lewis.... i promise im not letting the pinkness take over my head.. but what do you think?

    much appreciate all help

    Hi,

If all you need is simple sewing, the Argos one is OK :)

    TMIF x

edit: Obviously, if you found more money, we could spend it for you, but that's fine, really!!

Can you borrow a basic sewing book from the library :) Just an idea. There're some great ones out there... I will try and find the one I like later x

edit 2: this is the one I have - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Sewing-Bible-Reference-Mastering/dp/1843404117/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286553144&sr=8-1-fkmr1 If you can beg, borrow, steal, acquire, get for crimbo etc, it's great. Others will have alternatives ;)

edit 3: The argos one is MUCH better imho. That John Lewis one is diddy!

Thank you for replying :) i've got a basic sewing book arriving tomorrow morning (I'm keen lol). Oh thanks for the opinion on the the sewing machine.. I needed someone to take me out of ''ahhh its pink' frame of mind!.. The argos value one has pretty good reviews.. would you say its a good starter machine? I love all things crafty and cant wait to get started!
    Thanks again!
    Em x
  • I think the Argos one is fine for starting out (unless you want to spend more and futureproof yourself that is)... can you find somewhere where they are in stock? If not, we can have a peek and see if there is something else suitable. I remember saying something about a £65 in Asda...?

The pink one is too small for normal use I'd say x

I have found one in Sunderland which I could pick up.. is it a good buy to start off with? I would be very grateful with any other recommendations :) *off to search for asda machine*
