I always sew my buttons on with double thread, that has been knotted. Then I use a matchstick between the button and the fabrc to allow for he give to move the button.
I Sew through the holes and the fabric 3 or 4 times, then on the wrong side, I push the needle part way through, wrap the remaining thread around the needle and continue to pull through. then I just do one more small stich into the knot at the back and cut off.
Havent had any complaints?
Thanks for that. I do that too apart from the matchstick- its got to be my technique then... I'll try it with the matchstick and see how we get on!0 -
Mummy Jo I always use button thread. I don't find ordinary thread stands up to any wear but button thread is SOOOOO strong it lasts longer than the fabric it's attached to!
A very old tip is to put a matchstick between the button and the fabric and sew the button on so that it is trapped between the two, then when you pull it out it leaves a little 'stalk' of cotton. Wrap your thread round it a couple of times and tie it off, and hey presto you have a button that isn't tight to the fabric.Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
Oops sorry Mooloo, just realised you beat me to the matchstick thing!Oh dear, here we go again.0

Mooloo - I've never come across "Button Thread" - I mainly use Guterman as I do find the other stuff is even worse - Is it just thicker? Are my local sewing supplies shop likely to stock it?0

Sorry JennyJelly - I read Mooloo in your post and thought that was you - Oops!0

I havent seen button twill for years, I just use the guttermann that I sew the garment up with. Polyester are stronger, I find. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Hello,
I've just found this thread and think it's fab! I've recently dusted off my sewing machine and have mostly been making roman blinds for our new house (much easier than you might think) and am gearing up to make some presents for Christmas.
Nice to "meet" you!
Welcome to the thread ladyverte (and Mummyjo) Nice to "meet" you too!
Love the wee mouse Georgia.
I havent done any sewing all week although have bought 3 new books and cant wait for them to arrive. One of them is a Xmas one so am looking forward to getting stuck in to making something when they arrive. Also going to make one of Cuddles doorstop cats and loads of other stuff with all my lovely new fabric that I got from gagafabrics. Just need to win the lottery and give up my job first. Never have time otherwise!0 -
Not sure if anyone ever used this company but looks like they have quite a good range of fabrics (and they stock my favourite - Michael Miller - yummy!)
