Have checked the bobbin tension and its OK.
Have to strip it down every time this happens, so the bobbin case and housing are clean.
Haven't checked the needle, but its fine on cotton, and I'm using a zig zag stitch.
Tension is fine for the 12" then the fabric seems to just jam and the needle goes up and down but fabric stays still. When I free it, there is a ball of thread underneath and through the feed dogs which have snagged the fabric.
I am using polyester thread by Korbond.
The last machine I used was an old hand Singer which would sew anything with the same stitch and needle - leather, denim, velvet etc so I'm sure its me that has a setting wrong. Just not sure which one.
ok, it still sounds to me as though the bobbin or needle arent right, rather than a tension problem. have you taken apart the shuttle race and given it a real good clean - thread from terry cloth, can hide anywhere.
some fabrics, like cotton are alot more forgiving when it comes to sewing, so thats prob why no problems show up when you sew with that
also, the brand of thread you are using isnt that great. its more suited to hand sewing, and is quite fibrous and fluffy. For machine sewing you need something really smooth, it really does pay to go for the name brands like Gutermann and Robison Anton (this is embroidery thread, but i just like the glossy finish it gives)
what machine do you have? it just might not be up to sewing thick fabrics

have you tried putting some greaseproof paper under the fabric I know it sounds daft but have ago it will stop the build up of lint0 -
Hello everyone!
Wow! What amazing, beautiful things you have createdI am just venturing into the sewing world - I have my first lesson with a good friend of mine, who has kindly offered to teach me to sew, on Friday and I'm really looking forward to it!
It will take me a (long) time to get up to the standard where I can make beautiful cushions/quilts/clothes the way a lot of you can but it's certainly inspirational!
Anyway, just thought I'd give a wave
Jo
Welcome Jo, glad you have found us
I had not done any sewing for years (and I do mean years) until I found this thread and so far I have done loads of different bags, a jacket, 2 quilts (ok one was cheating), cushion covers and lots of small items (lavender hearts).
The internet is your friend, loads of tutorials and here loads of help and insperation
Hope you have fun sewing and look forward to seeing what you do (dont worry most of us are all part-time sewers that dont always get things right :rotfl:) my 1st bag turned out more like a bin bag :rotfl: but it was all a learning curveGetting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a timeand Love sewing

some more great projects - that is an amazing achievement Spiral. I have made a lap quilt & machine quilted in the ditch but I would love to make a quilt big enough for my King-size bed. I just dont think my machine would be up to quilting a quilt that size & didnt know if it was even possible to reach the middle, I also didnt fancy hand quilting it- but your "tied" method has given me an idea!
I know I read early on in the thread about buying from the US - does anyone have any sites to reccomend and any tips for avoiding tax charges & saving on P&P?0 -
I forgot to add - cuddles, my machine only seems to like Guttermans thread, anything else breaks or gets "chewed up" It's a pain though as John Lewis doesnt sell it anymore & it is harder for me to get to the smaller independent shops with my 2 little boys in tow.0

Thanks Tamster!I got the idea from the pattern but there is a whole flickr group for tied quilts so they are a real thing! my book says for modern batting you can do one every 6 inches, less if you're using wool batting. i found it irritatingly fiddly but far quicker than hand quilting!
i just won a Charm pack from Sew Mama Sew - a usa fabric company and blog with great patterns and ideas ect. their shipping seemed fine and it's per weight so there's a little maths to do. they were VERY quick.Tamster150 wrote: »It's a pain though as John Lewis doesnt sell it anymore & it is harder for me to get to the smaller independent shops with my 2 little boys in tow.
they don't?! gosh! how strange! i thought Guttermun thread was the pinnical.Just realised i praised the wrong people earlier (not that your makes arent fabulous Danables:D).Anyhoo welldone Spiral on the quilt you made its gorgeous and pooky those hexagons are looking amazing.
