Since i've started working in a fabric shop, I want to start making things, but not quite sure what to start with. I was looking at the fabrics that are reduced and cost pennies (well 30p to £1.13 a metre I have looked at) as I don't want to spend much to start with and wondered if you know of any craft projects for these fabrics you might like to share.
Tulle/veiling
rip stock and other kite like material
pu leather
patterned voiles
organza
Thanks in advance
Sandra

now that would be one rocky horror show of an outfit lol
tbh, most of those are what you would use for furnishing or window dressing, so not really my field of expertise
is it really called rip stock? all these years ive been referring to it as rip stop! no wonder i get odd looks when buying it, i just assumed it was because i said i used it to make nappies and eco san pro lol

Hello everyone
I have finally managed to read the WHOLE thread - it has taken 2 weeks lol!
I have just dug out my Mums old Bernina that I think is older than me & have been doing a few bits. I have also made a "Buttercup" bag. I didnt see the link about making it bigger, I just blew it up on the photocopier from A4 to A3 and it is the perfect size for my purse, phone, keys & few other essentials.
I have also made my first quilt using some flannel jelly strips, that I bought at a local quilt making store and a couple of old baby sheets. I just made it up as I went along. I also used some lovely toweling/fleecy material that was a cover for my nappy-change mat. I quilted it "in the ditch" and also binded it using a tutorial from this amazing ladies site "crazy mum quilts blog" she managed to complete 42 quilts last year!!!! I am a bit hooked now, i have signed up for a beginners quilting class.
I have also been buying "SEW HIP" from my local newsagent - i think it is really good. Lots of different projects for all abilities - clothes, quilts, toys, household stuff. I managed to buy a few back issues at a fabric store a while back for 50p. They had the covers ripped off as apparently they have to send them back to the publishers but the content was all still there. And it is cheaper than the other one you have mentioned on here. (£3.99 i think)
I am desperate to make a big 3d bus that I saw in there for my son (well I am going to try & make it a fire engine) but I have been searching the carboots & charity shops for some heavy red fabric with no pattern like a cotton twill or similar, i just missed out on a pair of curtains on ebay that would of suited
I have just put my Mums machine in for service & repair as the pedal foot is dodgy - I thought the man was scamming me when he said a replacement Bernina foot would be £85 but I googled and that seems the case (OMG) However he said if it was unrepairable he would probably be able to use a general foot which would be £25. Apparently they are one of the best machines to have & better to spend a small fortune fixing it, than to spend the same on a new machine!
I am an eager beginning - my next projects are some cushion covers, patchwork or applique. and I bought some lovely fabric yesterday carbooting - it is like an embroderie anglais with a print, it has quite a nice border print so I am thinking a maxi dress but I cant find a pattern that doesnt need a zip. I have never done zips & have no zipper foot (looked on ebay & they are £25 for my machine) Anyone reccomend a pattern? I am tall, size 16, evenly proportioned but large bust?
Loving all the sock monkeys, and Tilda projects btw!0 -

It is rip stop, but its not surprising I put stock, still getting used to what things are. I hadn't heard of it before I started working there and still not sure what people do with it! I am always asking people what they do with it. So far its been banners and kite like outdoor roof coverings for smoking areas!

I have finished my quilt :j I started Friday and worked all weekend on it as I was determined to get it done
I had the squares and wadding already, brought off ebay about 8 months agoand I had a large white cotton sheet for the backing so with the long weekend away I went :rotfl:
I loved doing it and am now planning the next one. Im most proud of getting the squares to line up as the only other patchworking I have ever done was my mum's pillow cases I made for mothers day.
