  • I was just wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction, I'm looking for an "easy" project to start on, I've only just sussed out how to sew in a straight line! Any recommendations would be much appreciated x

How about a laundry bag for something simple. Base your work on the shap of a pillowcase. Take a length of patterned material l__ __l, fold in half pattern sides together l_l, sew down the 2 sidesl, you should now have the basic bag shape, fold over a hem, sew leaving a 1inch gap, thread a cord thro, turn bag right way out, draw the top together using the cord.

For whatever reason i want to turn myself into a true woman, so my new years resolution is to learn to sew! I havent done it since school and i would probably struggle to sew on a button ha. I thought while ive finished uni and have some spare time on my hands i would try my hand at some things! I have seen some ideas on the internet for making shopping bags so i was going to make that my first project, but i am aiming to make myself a pair of knickers whenever i get good enough!! (i work in lingerie, so im quite excited about making my own)

Cant wait to get myself sorted, i just need the bits (some of which i will be raiding my mothers sewing box for!)

im off to read the thread now

I did have to buy some of the fabric for each quilt, and bought good wadding to go in the middle of the "sandwich".

A cheaper alternative to wadding is to use a fleece blanket - the cheapest out of shops such as poundstretcher is fine, as it's just a padding and not directly on the skin, and the fleece is lovely and warm.
  • I seem to be getting addicted to making baby blankets:D I just couldn't resist this lovely pink floral fleece:D, the backing is pink flannelette. I also made another little taggy to match. I'm afraid the camera doesn't do the colours justice though:rolleyes:

    That's a fantastic idea!!!

Is it possible to patchwork both sides of a patchwork blanket - the reason I ask is that I don't know if I'll have a 'lining' sheet anywhere - although, I might have an old pair of curtains somewhere that I could sort of chop and shape if that makes sense???

I don't see why not - it'd just be a lot more work!
  • Sandy thank you for your reply, sounds a super first task, I'll let you know how I get on.
Stardrops your baby blankets are so cute! My little one plays with his tag on his PJ's or any top he has on when he is tired, I think he'd love that!

I'd be interested in opinions on this, too, as I'm looking at exactly the same one as a 'starter'. I've got some vouchers which would pay for practically all of it and am really keen to get a sewing machine. I don't need an all singing-all dancing model at the moment but obviously want something decent.
I haven't really used a sewing machine since 'O' Level Needlework (waaaaay back in the 80's!!!!!), so I'd like something not too complicated to use.
    Thanks folks
