I`ve just spent a nice hour making 2 Goodnight Angel bodies. i`ve stuffed them and just have to sew the arms/legs to the bodies. They were so easy to make and now can`t wait to dress them, plus give their faces features.
The fabric i`ve used for them is from a dress i bought for £1 from a charity shop, and its 55% silk, 45% cotton in a lovely dark natural shade.
Just have to learn how to upload pics on here once done ! lol

Well done nuttywoman, it took me months to get round to making one never mind two! I found that the angels were quite straight forward to make but the nightgown was a bit fiddly but that could be just me:rolleyes: Looking forward to the pics.

Stardrops, thanks for comments. The only reason i`m making 2 is because i decided to make one for a friend for her birthday in Feb and once its made i won`t want to part with it :D
Thanks for the warning about the nightgown , not decided what fabric to use yet though. ;)

    Hi ladies

I wonder if anyone can help me, i bought a sewing machine last year and apart from making a pair of curtains and a apron i really havent used it very much. We have all been invited to a 70's fancy dress party in 2 weeks time. I could go and buy a costume for me and my o/h but i would really like to make one. I have 2 sons, one is going as a bay city roller and the younger one is going as a 1970's punk. So thats them sorted out but i would like to make myself a costume something like this http://www.joke.co.uk/fancy_dress/vintage_70s_blouse_and_bell_bottoms~25219.html
but i have really no idea how to go about it. It doesnt look too complicated but i wondered if from experiance if it would be cheaper to buy it instead of trying to make it. There is a fantastic shop where the material would only cost about £2.50 - £2.99 a metre
I would also like to try to make my o/h a hippy style costume? Are there any good patterns out there that would help or are they all to expensive as i obviously want to make this as moneysaving as possible.

Anyway enough of me waffling on if anyone can give me any suggestions i would be very greatfull. :A

for the trousers why not get a pair of your jeans, cut the bottom of the legs into strips and sew in triangles off funky fabric (same length as the cuts) onto each side of each strip. That way you get the flare and the funk.

for the top you just need to add princess sleeves. I'd probably get an over sized top from a charity shop, cut it down to size and use the excess to make the sleeves.

I can do patchwork, and fancied doing a quilt. Looking at some of the pictures it appears that some of them have a curvy machine stitched pattern all over the top. Is this done by freehand drawing over the top of the quilt then sewing thro all the layers or just some, or are there special patterns available? If patterns, where do you get them from, is there a special name for them, are there any to download free from the internet?
    Thanks
    Sandy

edit: sorry for spelling mistake on title, should be machine stitching, but I can´t (don´t know how) to edit the title
  • can i ask how you rate the spray baste? is it good, is it easy to use etc? does it stick ok etc...thanks

I love using the spray baste. It certainly holds all three layers together long enough for me to machine quilt and without the need for all the pinning and tacking usually associated with quilting! :D

There seem to be a few to choose from but the one I use washes out in the first wash so is "semi-permanent" and is easy to sew through.

I use masking tape to stick the backing fabric to my kitchen floor, then spray that and lay the wadding on top. I then spray the wadding and lay ut the pieced patchwork top. The spray baste is only tacky so allows plenty of time to reposition fabric and smooth out any wrinkles. I do use quilter's safety pins around the edges as a "belt and braces" approach.

Shame it is so expensive though.:(

So started and after sewing them together realised I had put one piece on upside down lol so sat and unpicked it and after having half it stitched realised I was doing the same :rotfl:

OK done it for THIRD time and last night was very proud of my work, firgured this was half of my centre for top, then when working out teh measurements realsie it was to long

I did acually work out how many squres wanted but of course did not pay attention, so have to take some off it today again , giving up the will to live here guys

hello, what a great thead! I'm usually over at Old Style or the painful 'trying to sell a house', but would like to join in here too.

I sew, but not as much as i'd like. Mostly household things, stuffed things and decorations. This year for yule decorations all i managed was some stuffed felt star bunting and a couple of patchwork stockings (thanks to kirsties Handmade idea but i improved on the technique! :D)

I use thrifted and up-cycled fabric and I'd love to make more clothes. I have succeeded at a Saxon style dress and cloak, but the effort has put me off doing more!

Thanks for the Sewing Room ~ I feel all inspired already! :T

I have just received the readers digest book so gonna have a look through that over next few days.

    One quick question though first:
I bought some curtains for my sons bedroom, they match the bedding. However they are proper curtains and not tab top if you know what I mean. Anyway, when I was searching the web last night I came accross a site that sells the curtain rings that would make the curtains usable on a pole. So....is this difficult to do and does anyone know how to do it?

Not sure if people will understand what I mean but heres hoping.

First of all never worry about spelling when you are creative its allowed!http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2010/01/index.html

This is the best blog I have found on quilting. It explains everything from start to finish. I can sew the top and middle "sandwiches" of fabrics together but never got the quilting right hence an unfinished quilt lying in my sewing stuff. I think there are loads of video tutorials on You Tube as well if you just type in stippling as it is called. There are one or two quilting threads on here so I get a bit confused which to post on but as Im interested in all sewing I thought I'd post on here. Good Luck anyway.
