Vicki I pretty much make them up as I go, but originally I followed a pattern from the Tilda book which shows how the fabrics and zip sandwich together. Don't be scared of zips, just give it a go, they are cheap enough if you mess it up just try again. If you pm me your email address I will send you a scanned copy of the method I used to put zips in my bags.

Yeah, took 2 mins. Something you can try while you wait to get your machine back :)

Yeah, except she's got my cutting out scissors as well and the other scissors in the house are rubbish.

Kandi, I want to make one of those bags, where did you get the pattern?

I'm scared of zips, I don't know why, I've never done one not even watched my mum so they really are a big unknown. Any tips or words of encouragement would be great!

I had the same problem as you, I thought zip's would be hard to put in but then I found this tutoiral and I now use it all the time :D

Members on thesewingforum have been making their first quilts following step-by-step online instructions by another member. http://www.thesewingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=20527&page=2

I like ehow.com for video tutorials. You might find something that interests you on there. I have this one in my favourites but still haven't tried making a quilt yet. http://www.ehow.com/video_4419004_sewing-strips-quilted-table-runner.html?cp=1&pid=1

For something smaller, I bought one of these nativity panels to quilt. It is too big and I haven't anywhere to hang it in one piece, so I think I'll cut a few of the pictures and work them individually.http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Star-Wonder-Christmas-Quilting-Panel-Sewing-Fabric-/310183956584?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Crafts_Quilting_ET&hash=item4838679068 ( I didn't buy mine from ebay)

Hope your knee op isn't too far away and all goes well.

Thanks for that, I'll be spending an afternoon having a read through.

    Love the cupcake bag!

I finally finished my cotton maxi dress (cut it out two weeks ago, but only started sewing on Sunday!) You can't see the material all that well but its this.

I used New Look pattern 6774, which has an incredible ammount of variations!

I am beyond chuffed with the end result. There is not an error on it I can see, and I'm super critical, and I wore it to a hen party dinner last night and five people asked where I got it!!!

Next up I'm finally going to tackle that jersey dress, its all cut out, but sewing 4metre strips in straight lines is offputting - a wobble at the start and I'll be spending hours with the stitch unpicker!

Dinah your dress is great - fits like a glove!
Re jersey dress, do you have to change the tension on your machine or use a different kind of needle? I want to make a copy of a jersey dress I already have but Im a bit scared of the material and have never used it before. Any tips would be welcome!

Loving your Raven, he looks rather wise yet menacing; I could do with one of those to tease my cat with! Sorry that would just be cruel wouldn't it? :)

Thanks Kandi :). Actually i just made one without the stand to hang up, and it would make quite a good cat toy!:D

Also has anyone ever made a quilt? I really want to, but I only ever make clothes, so have no idea where to start!

i really like patchwork but the quilting side of things gets me down a bit. your local library should have some books that might help with the basics.

Here is a pic of the patchwork I started nearly 30 years ago :o
