  • I have a wooden cantilever sewing box on legs which I want to decorate and give to my SIL as a christmas pressie next christmas.Does anyone have any ideas on how I could decorate this.
Its quite an old one but not a very nice wood so I wouldnt mind painting it but is there any other way people usually decorate these?Inspiration needed please.

I painted one and lined with wallpaper (Laura Ashley sample) and it came out really nice. There are pics on my blog in July I think. I still can't link to it though, sorry. I got the idea from someone else in Blogland who lined theirs with fabric and it looked great.

Sounds like a lovely gift for your SIL.

  • Wow!What a blog. You have been busy.I found the sewing box in July as you said and its lovely.I think I will do something darker and a bit bohemian with roses for my SIL,maybe something which looks like its come out of an old fashioned gypsy caravan.
The other bits on you pages are fab and theres so much to look at,so much inspiration. The mini christmas puds look really pretty and yummy and the felt decorations are beautiful.

That sewing box was lovely! That is the kind I would like but they are so expensive to buy new and I have never seen a preloved one.

Just popped over to have a peek, really nice blog, hopefully by this time next year I'll have some sewing accomplishments to add to mine!! I think the bunting is a great idea, customized for any occasion - I'll be putting that in the 'wanna do' list ;-)

Can I just ask everyone, please :D - where do you get fabric from? There are a few shops in my area, but they are small and 'specialized' and VERY expensive  I have collected a few bits and pieces from charity shops but wondered if other people had a favourite place for fabric that was more reasonable and online? Ta....

    Hi

I buy mine from some sellers on ebay, usually fat quarters. We have a couple of shops that sell fabric near us but they aren't the best for choice tbh. I sometimes buy fabric from hobbycraft but again not much choice. We used to have a hugh fabric shop near us but it closed down :0( Sorry not much help.

I have had 3 of those cantilever boxes so far! All bought from boot sales for £1-£2 ish. Two I painted and sold on ebay and the third is still waiting to be prettied for my own personal use. It came full to the brim of old sewing bits and pieces. I nearly burst when I saw it! :o

I buy most of my fabric in FQs from ebay too. Not the most cost effective way to buy it but it means I can usually buy a selection of 3 or 4 fabrics instead of a metre in one design. Dunelm is quite good too if you have one near you.
