Above the text you are reading it mentions fig A. "Sew together along one 50cm edge. Sew 20cm down each short edge, as in Figure A.

So that would leave approx 25cm. this would give you the opening at the side, as you started with pieces 45x50cm.

I think you have misread the instructions. I think it means get one piece of outer and place one piece of lining on top right sides together and then sew across the top and down each side for 8 inches, then do the same for the other two pieces. Then you would have two parts to the bag. Then you put the two parts of the bag together like in the second pic. I think if you sew the first the right way you will be able to see how to do it more clearly. If not come back on here and I can have another look for you. Might not be until tomorrow though xxx
  • I agree with Rufusdog. She beat me to it while I was playing but this is what I worked out. I hope it makes sense.

I haven't got the book but I have had a play and I think I have figured it out.

    When you say this:
I am placing two peices of lining fabric right side to right side on top of two peices of outer fabric right sid eto ride side, sewing across and down the sides as in picture A.

Are you sewing one piece of lining to one piece of fabric right sides together so you end up with two seperate squares? If you have misunderstood it and are putting all four pieces on top of each other that is probably where you have gone wrong.

I did a small mock up with scraps and I put one piece of lining onto one piece of fabric and sewed along the long edge and 8 inches down each side of the shorter edge. Then I repeated it with the other bits. Then put right sides together of the fabric and right sides together of the lining so it looks like figure b. Pin it into place and then mark your corners with the plate. Stitch round the fabric and then the lining remembering to leave a hole to turn it through to the right side. The trick to a neat finish at the bottom of the slits is to make sure your stitching joins as close as possible at the place where the two lots of stitching meet at the bottom of the slit.

Trim away teh excess seam allowance, turn it through and then you can press it then attach your handles.

Anyway thanks for posting this because I have got an odd piece of fabric with large musical notes on and you have given me an idea what to do with it. I will make a bag for my singing mad daughter to go with the pencil case and make up bag I am going to make her out of my broken singing in the rain umbrella. That is when I eventually get round to it.icon7.gif

    Those bags are lovely.

I can see why danables is struggling because tbh the instructions are not very well written. Anyway, I'm sure with the help she's been given she will manage to sort it out - I might have a go at making one myself

They are not terribly clear and to be honest with Tilda stuff I mostly keep checking the pictures to keep myself right.
Hope you manage, and hope you can post us a pic once it's done.

Kandipandi I love the brown materials you have got, what a bargain. I am still yet to make anything despite having some material to do something with. I am just in the middle of jewellery making for mother's day but I promise when I eventually get my act together and get my sewing machine out I will post pics of what I make.

Everyone on here gives me so much inspiration, it's fantastic.

I love this thread, you are all so helpful to each other!

I've got some bits of fabric off Ebay as one of my t-shirts has a stain that won't come out. It's one of my favourite ones in terms of shape and style so I thought I would use it as a template to make new ones. I will come and post pictures when it's done.

I've also got ideas about modifying some of my clothes by adding sequins and other bits of decoration, to make them a bit more interesting. I can't afford to buy new clothes and am getting bored with the ones I have! Would be great to make them a bit different.
Hello all, i have only just found this thread. It's strange because i've been considering starting up a little ebay business, selling some of my makes so if anyone has done this i would love you to share your thoughts. I really need to make some money and sewing is one of the few things i'm o.k at.
That sounds like a great idea. Have you ever been on Etsy and Folksy? I've got shops on both selling knitted items, and I also sell on Ebay. I've only been doing it since December so it's not making me a fortune (yet!) but I'm sure it will pick up the more people get to hear about it. I think you would do really well on either of those sites, as long as you are prepared to promote yourself A LOT!

I would love to make one of those knitting needle rolls but have no idea how to go about it! It would be really helpful for me as it would keep a bit better organized!

I've been busy again, made cushion covers for my kids Tripp Trapp chairs saving myself about £40 even when I take buying the fabric into consideration!

i'm off on holiday tomorow  ... so the only sewing i've been doing lately is sewing buttons on OHs shorts, swapping buttons around on my top (so the mismatched button is under my hair), sewing up a rip in my bag and turning up some cheap primark linen trousers. bye!
