Hi Ladies, I'm a newbie here but not a total newbie to sewing. I started when I was in my teens and went to dressmaking classes at night school while my mates were getting drunk on the park!
I have decided to dust my machine down and make something for myself rather than just use it as an alteration machine! I bought a pattern for a simple t shirt top from my local haberdashery, it's a Butterick fast and easy and two lots of fabric and can't wait to start again!
Can anyone tell me where the best sources of fabric are online and in the Nottinghamshire area please?
    Happy sewing!

Gosh everyone puts me to shame. I'm determined to get my machine out. I have a dress that I'm altering into a skirt to finish for DD. And an amazing jacket we picked up in a CS in a bright floral print, so 80's but I'm going to take out the shoulder pads and shorten the sleeves and it's just like a jacket in U*ban Outfitters that was £80. It will get loads of wear by my DD and I may be tempted to borrow it myself:D

I would like to get started on the millions of projects I have planned for my house but......:o

Thifty, if you live in north Notts there is a fantastic fabric stall on Newark market on Wednesday. He has some really good quality fabric for £3-5 per metre. Nice man too he gives good advice. I bought some beautiful Rose and Hubble cotton for £4 a metre last week. My winter coat is made from lovely wool bought for £6 per metre.
  • I was bought a sewing machine for Christmas and now the opportunity has arisen to actually have a go with it... I haven't got a clue what I'm doing so tomorrow should prove to be a steep learning curve. :o

If anyone has any tutorial tips or things that I need to know simply whilst threading and having a go at sewing, I would really appreciate them.

Hi mumto2monkeys. Welcome to the thread. Im a complete sewing newbie. So far ive made loads of cushions, a sewing machine dust cover, a pin cushion. And a sample quilt. Ive also started a sewing course set up by the local council. BUT I have learnt more by watching YouTube.

What would you like to make? Are you swaying more to dress making or soft furnishings
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

Hmo, lovely hearts, love the fabrics you have used xx
  • Love the hearts hmo. I had trouble doing the sewing bit in a heart shape when I did mine, any tips?! Guess it's just practice.
mumto2monkeys, I'm with winniepooh on watching youtube, showed me what all the bits to my machine were as well as lots of other sewing stuff. Good luck!
  • Thanks winniepooh - ideally both, but to start with more soft furnishings. I have made hand-pieced patchwork before, but I didn't quilt it (used it as applique detail on a cushion), so I'd like to quilt. I also desperately need several pairs of lined curtains as mine are looking tragic. I'd start with something simple if you have any suggestions. I'm edging towards YouTube as I used it to learn to crochet in summer.

Hand pieced cushion cover: (hope this works)
