Found this thread yesterday, and thanks to insomnia I caught up since the start of this year!
Can I join please? I have recently started quilting and have several on the go at the moment! I have been on a quilting course, but due to being busy at home/work I haven't finished any of them. I have started watching different parts on youtube to try to learn. the quilts I am doing are all different blocks - nothing like a challenge for starting!
Ihave seen on youtube spray glue being used as basting - has anyone any experience with this and how did you get on with it?

I use spray fabric adhesive all the time when I sandwich my quilts together for quilting its fine

    Am I being too ambious.

A bit of background - im recovering from a serious and horrible illness and me and my nurse decided that thru 2013 I would set myself small goals. Anyway i have quite a list :D but they are only small goals like making my own bread and jams or finishing my cross stitch (which i've nearly finished):j. Anyway I decided to take a sewing course which turned out to be patchwork which is great and Im really enjoying it. So anyway on my list ive put that I would love to make a roman blind for my downstairs loo and to make a rail fence quilt, ooh and cushions. Now bearing in mind I have over ten months to do this I didnt think that was bad. However the course tutor said Im not going to pull it off and I was aiming to high and that roman blinds are really hard to make. Now Im starting to doubt myself.

Now im not naturally crafty and lack vision but ive took to a sewing machine pretty quickly and can sew a pretty dam good straight line..... Id be !!!!!!ed if I used a pattern thats not straight lines lol

Anyway just wanted to rant.....sorry guys

Hi don't be out off I made roman blinds for our new house and had never made them before I bought Debbie shores roman blinds DVD and followed that I started with blinds that were 48inch wide by a similar drop and the last one I made was for my kitchen window which is over 8 ft wide they will be on my blog somewhere you can put roman blind in the search box if you want to look

Agree that Roman blinds are not hard to do. you will manage them, and don't let a teacher put you off. they don't all know everything about their subject. I learnt that at the age of 11 when I met my first teacher and again at O level.

I agree with Mooloo. You do what you think you're capable of.
You know best and whatever happens you'll have learnt along the way.

I never thought that I could make a wedding dress but one day I did. Then I made it a business for several years. I came across many problems but just took it step by step and before I knew it I was making hundreds a year. Basic dresses I admit. But all were what the bride wanted.
I have learnt to just try things and what ever the outcome is I know that I tried and that I can always try again.
Baby steps is all it took.
Sewing again since my illness means learning again but its more adapting and confidence now.

I read in a magazine years ago, about a chap that moved into a house that needed lots doing to it; he had little money - I think he had lost his business & his partner - and he spent his days at the local library because it was something to do & was nice & warm in there.

One day he picked up a Laura Ashley home decorating book & after reading it, decided he'd have a go at doing-up the place.

He managed to get a sewing machine from somewhere, went to a jumble sale to get fabrics to practice on & made tablecloths to cover boxes and old furniture to get them to match.

He went to more jumble sales & then went on to make blinds & curtains for every window, chair covers, cushion covers & there were some photos & the place looked great - you'd never know that he had used so little money to get it looking the way it did.

He said that whenever he started to a new project, he always used old fabric to practice on first. ;)

I think it must have been part of a series or a special issue because I remember several houses that had been decorated by men on their own.

I used a kit from here http://www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/cat/blinds/roman-blind-kits/. It was much easier than i expected. did a large window with 3 different sections of fabric. Look on my homepage if you would like to see it. I am very much still a beginner. I found it challenging as it is so big but i think it's great that i managed to make exactly what i wanted which i'd have never got in a shop. You go for it!!!

Not at all really easy!!! I'll have a look for the pattern tonight and let you know what it is. I think it's simplicity. Must get round to making somemore. Little ones playgroup are looking for prize donations for a fundraising bingo and as i have soooo much fabric it won't cost me anything to make a couple.
