    Morning all

Now this is going to sound really really stupid. Im attempting an envelope cushion cover. My cushion is 19 inches. So I know I have to cut an extra inch buf how do you work out the size of the other pieces?

I tend to make two pieces that are around 2/3rds of the size of your cushion. So that they close well. Anything smaller and they will tend to gape open.
So on a 19" cushion you will need to do around 13".
You could make your cushion one big piece of fabric, approx 47" by the width of the cushion, i.e. 21". So that you turn over the hem at each end, and then have to only sew the side seams.
If you understand what I mean?
its the quickest way of making a cushion, but it will depend on the pattern of your fabric.
    :D

Got my sewing machine a week ago and just made my first item...a catnip mouse for the cat.

It's the first thing I've done by myself from start to finish...and I only jammed the machine once and had to get Mum to unpick one seam for me.

The cat however isn't so impressed, she sniffed it once then walked away. You can't win 'em all.

I'd be very interested in how the kindle cover was made as I'm getting tired of my bought one :)
  • Hi everyone

Ive been very lucky and have given yet another machine and its a Toyota precision its about twenty years old. I have six different feet. Ive googled to find an instruction manual for it and I cant find anything.

Is anyone familiar with this machine

Rufusdog well done on finishing your 1st cushion

Winniepoo and Vic24 thanks for your interest in the kindle cover. I made it by.
I measured my kindle and allowed a 1/2" seam on the 2 long and 1 short side, on the other short side gave it a 2" allowance. I made the patchwork for the outside and cut a piece of plain fabric for the inner to this size Cut 2 pieces of fabric 1/2 the width and you need a depth of the frame around your screen plus a seam allowances sew hem along 1long side, then you can sew elastic along this hem for extra support place on the inside piece of fabric turn under the 2 short sides and stitch in place (this is to hold the kindle in place then I cut a piece of wadding and a piece of thick card to the size required
without the seam allowances. place the card flat long side top and bottom then I scored the card twice in the middle so it gave me a 1/2" spine in the middle (like a book) for folding. place fabrics right sides together and the wedding on top and stitch the two long and 1 short side, clip corners turn into right side . insert the card and close the last side sewing in a tape to go around your button sew on button

this seems long winded sorry but hope this helps if your not sure you can of course ask me and I'll try and explain better.
    take care and happy stitching

Thanks, will make a few more straight seamed items before I attempt it but will file it away :)

Made a cloth bag from an old duvet cover today (complete with front pocket) to hold my wool. Seams are mostly straight!!
