The Sewing Room

Also another dilema, not so much sewing but more style. The dress I am going to do will be cream and quite plain apart from a pattern in the fabric. I wont be wearing a showy necklace with it due to the style of the neck so for colour I was thinking of having a pair of shoes in a brighter colour. Have seen a nice pair in a darkish bright pink if you get me that would suit my feet and can imagine the colour going with the dress. Not sure if I can get a back to match exactly but might be able to knock something up just for a clutch thing. Its the hat I am wondering about, I want to do one that is similar to a fascinator but just a bit bigger looking. I have the pattern for it. Was going to use extra dress fabric to make it but now wondering whether to do it in a pink to match the shoes? Or cream with pink feathers to match the shoes? or just keep it plain cream? If it is all plain cream I dont thin the shoes will go and I would have to have neutral colour. Dont want to pay out for two lots lol and its not something I can try on. Any ideas please?0

I would use a mixture of the cream and add the pink feathers to match the shoes. (If its slightly different pink it will not matter as the whole of your body is distancing them!). I would also be inclined to make yourself a clutch to tone with the shoes. It would be simple to do that, an envelope clutch is simple to do. Maybe with a slight asymetrical flap, and a magnetic clip. Seen one somewhere on my travels, but not for the life of me remember at the moment. Maybe in another of my magazines. I will take a look.

Advice needed please.
I really dont know the correct terms for quilting as many of you know I'm a complete novice.
What are the different feet needed for each stage of quilting?I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!JUST LOVES THE O/S BOARD0 -

I hadnt thought of that, though as I am not out and about for a while, DGD is now ill, so dont know when I will next go out. I have never been to the library here, infact I havent been in a library since 1990's. Oh dear. Mostly as i have been on the move all the time, and secondly because I tend to buy books and keep them. Now I have the kindle too.!
I like your kindle cover.
I made a pouch for mine, but would like to make a cover that opens out like a book, and that I can read the kindle still inside. Perhaps keeping the kindle in place with elastic on the corners? like a bit the way stamps were held in albums when I was a kid!.When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

If your machine is one that you can change the position of the needle then you can sew the seams using a normal foot and adjust the needle across so that the width between needle and edge of foot is 1/4 inch. As for actual quilting the top, bottom and filling together, if you are doing plain straight stitching across the quilt you will need a walking foot that fits your machine. I bought one for my Singer, it cost about £35 and is quite chunky, it moves the fabric through under the foot equally so that the layers don't pucker. If you are wanting to do free motion quilting you will need a different foot, I cant think what they are called but they look like a letter C turned on its side like an upside down U. Might be called a darning foot, not sure.0 -
Hi there, I subscribe to your blog and this is how I did it, on the right hand side of your blog (near the bottom) there is a box headed Meta, under that there is a sub heading Entries RSS, if you click on that the Subscription page pops up.
I hope that makes sense!
Great blog too, lots of fab ideas and tips thank you
Oh wow thank you I never knew that0 -
Embroidery foot or free motion foot or even open toe foot they are called some time you only really need one of those for free motion quilting like I did on the lavender quilt before Christmas or the doll quilt I did the other day but as rufous dog said if you can do 1/4 inch seem that's fine for sewing your basic squares but once you come to quilt with your top fabric, bottom fabric and wadding you will need a walking foot.
If you don't have a 1/4 inch stitch on your machine or 1/4 inch foot just use your regular foot and a basic straight stitch but make sure you use this all the way through so all your squares are a consistent size also depending on what seem that gives you you will have to are in mind that your quilt may turn out a little smaller than anticipated0 -
Morning all
Now this is going to sound really really stupid. Im attempting an envelope cushion cover. My cushion is 19 inches. So I know I have to cut an extra inch buf how do you work out the size of the other pieces?I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally.
