Ocemeer, the easiest way to make knickers is to find an old pair that fit well and deconstruct at the seams and draw round for a pattern, remember seam allowances. Then you need to make sure you sew up as you took apart. it is best to use elastic lace at the waistband.

Just wondered if anyone had ideas what I could make for thank you gifts (instead of a party bag) for my grandchildrens 1st birthday party (twins).

I have had a few ideas which include the following:

    1. Pretty floral bibs for the girls and bandana style bibs for the boys.

    2. Bean bags

    3. Customise bought plain white t shirts with appliques....i.e. fake ties for the boys and flowers for the girls.

These are all going to take some time so I need to start preparing now.
Would anyone else have any other ideas that are not too expensive and time consuming?
    Thank you

Here is a pic of the little mouse I'd been working on from the Mollie Makes magazine. I almost gave up countless times but glad I persevered.

Glad you managed to finish him. He's super cute with his little trousers and waistcoat:T

Started to mess around with a Scrappie patchwork cushion last night. Using the scraps bag of Makower fabrics I got from Jackies fabrics. Interesting, never done it before, but I will practise. These fabrics were all London/jubilee fabrics, that had obviously been cut out for bunting. At least it means that the fabrics used are all complementary.

I got this selection as well, mine had been used for bunting including 2 completed pieces of bunting and a further 3/4 pieces cut out. I was going to try to do a cushion with a Union Jack on the front but I think it's going to be too complicated. My new idea is to use the fabric to applique something onto a plain cushion cover. Not sure what word to use: Olympics, Jubilee, 2012 etc. Thinking of something appropriate for this year that London designs will fir with.

    Any ideas gratefully received.

    Hi everyone,

I am new to the world of home made clothes; so far I've managed one dress, three tops (all following patterns) & one dress that I made up... from one of the top patterns! Oh, and a few bags... I'm now trying to revamp my summer wardrobe a bit & I've got some gorgeous silky feeling purple material that I want to make a halter top out of.. but I can't find a pattern I like. I can't post links as a new user, or I'd show a picture of what I want... but basically I'd like to gather the material at the base of the neck, and for it to hang over the bust - not be fitted underneath, & then to hang just over the top of my jeans... (not sure if that is a good enough description!)

Does anyone know of anywhere that I can get a pattern that is similar for a reasonable price (free preferably!!) ?

    Cheers!!

Hi just a quick heads up to check your local Aldi for sewing accessories. I've just come back from mine where I've bought 1 set containing large scissors, thread scissors, tape measure, pins, 2 packs of machine needles, thimble, quick unpick, threads etc and another containing 28 underthread bobbins in various colours, 28 spool sof thread in matching colours, 1 100m spool of invisible sewing thread and 5 spools of 20m sewing thread. Each set was £1.49.

I know the quality may nt be the best but for doing little projects for myself it's good enough.

    Thought this may help someone.

i was bought the " sew " book, along with the "make" book for my birthday, they both have ready to do projects inside the book. one that looks a bit like a tote bag until you get inside and realise its a tote bag for barbie maybe. they are a lot more complicated than i think the person who bought them for me were. starting with the "sew" project i have been given some cut out pieces but not alot else i was hoping some one has mage one and can help me get at least one prect off the ground please help?

are there any experienced sewers out there checking mse before they get the dinner on that can pehaps help with my problem am sure ds1 thinks i dont like it as i havent dived in as i normally would do
  • Hi! Not an that experienced. I also had that book as a present and couldn't wait to sew the tote bag. As you say it is much smaller than I imagined and the pattern looked complicated. BUT I read through them step by step and it worked!:j I am really pleased with it and my work colleagues can't believe I made it. Sorry not much use but it is possible even for us newbies. HB

homealone; Sorry I can't help you with your problem. Perhaps you could dive in and out of the book so that you can get your head around the instructions. One step at a time. Hellesbelles has had a success with one, well done.
