I am trying to help somebody find a replacement zip for a backpack. It appears that the specific zip type would be a 2-Way Head to Head Closed End. I am having trouble locating any UK shops (high street or online) that sell these types of zips. An example of this type of zip can be seen at the bottom of this link http://www.janzippers.com/structure.html. There seems to be lots of places selling 2-ways zips but these are replacements for jackets. I am afraid at this moment I don't know the other details such as colour, length, material - I am mearly trying to find somewhere that sells them first. Many thanks in advance

Well done Florencem :) My grandchildren are the same! I have 2 granddaughters (cousins) who are in the same school year/class and a few years ago they both had to have a Victorian costume. The trouble was, they told me on Friday after school & they had to be ready for Monday morning! I managed though - went to a jumble sale on Saturday morning and managed to find a long black skirt which was full enough to make a skirt for each of them. I altered two school blouses, added some lace and cut up an old white sheet (never throw any material away;)) to make aprons & mob caps. The teacher was very impressed and even the grandaughters were pleased!:D

I think that was the most challenging costume request given the time allowed, but spraying wellies and boxes silver to make a robot costume for one of my grandsons comes a close second.:rotfl:
Things we do - my eldest DD worked at a bar to earn money for private Physics lessons. They had the staff dress up about twice a moth - I suppose it was theme evenings. I made nun, Eygptian and Greek costumes - only ones I can remember now - it was in the mid 1980s.
This DD had a boyfriend who liked to go out in fancy dress on New Year's Eve - so that was more costumes. All the costumes were made with my stash - bits I had kept - just in case they came in useful! :rotfl:

    Would one of these work?

Hmmm think it might be the one end that is doubled on that one, will keep looking xx

There is a shop on Ebay called Alans Alterations. They sell numerous kinds of zips. May be if you contacted them they might be able to suggest something. I was thinking may be if you bought a metre of continuous zipping and put two sliders on you might be able to make something up to fit the one on the back pack.

The following are online retailers of fabric and related items for outdoor use.

    http://www.pennineoutdoor.co.uk/index.asp

    http://www.profabrics.co.uk/index.php

I don't think that either sell the exact type of zip that you require but they do sell the components for zips suitable for outdoor equipment. (I have used both companies but many years ago)

    http://www.questoutfitters.com/zipper_tips.htm

details how to make a zipper (of the sort you need double slider closed ends). I'm not sure if these companies sell the zipper stops but you can sew the ends of the zipper into the fabric

I did some sewing yesterday, we are going to a Christening later this month and I needed something to wear. OH bought me a new cardigan while we were out yesterday in a cream colour and I found a pair of brown trousers to go with them, then remembered the fabrics that my SIL gave me a while ago so had a look and found some lovely natural colour patterned fabric with some dark brown on. It is like a crepe sort of thing which has been knitted and was really easy to sew as it didn't fray at all.

My sister rang today to say my BIL got the bags of fabric for me. She said there were four bags full of it and it had just been stuffed in so she took it all out and folded it up so it would fit in less bags as it was taking up too much room. She said some of the bits were so big she couldn't fold them without laying them on the floor first and said there is a lovely selection. She couldn't believe it was only £2 for the lot. I can't wait to get them now to have a look myself but it will be at least a month before I can get them.

That sounds great. Top looks good too.
Gives you time to make room for the fabrics then!
Arm still playing up. Frustration city at the moment.
Maybe I will be better next week.
    Happy sewing everyone.

    Hello lovely people

Well today I have finished my first quilt and I love it! I wanted to have something bright and cheery in my front room that I can use in the evenings when it goes a little nippy as I am sick of seeing the brown cheap fleeces we were using over winter!!

Please take a look at my photos - fabric is 'Flora' by Moda. Not a perfect quilt as it is my first and made many mistakes but I am happy with it and its little quirks - ie not being straight!!!!!!

Hope everyone is having a lovely day - I want to go out but I am waiting in for someone to collect an ebay item that my hubby has sold (and he is out today - typical!) Jo x :D
