Kiess21; Your bag is absolutely gorgeeoous! You would never believe they were curtains in a former life. I bet your friends keep an eye on their curtains when you're visiting in case they see a big hole when you've left!! haha

Forgot to say Mooloo, my daughter is making a jeans quilt as well. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with yours.

    Hi ladies,

I have an idea in my head and wanted to know if you think it will work...

I'd like to make a quillow but I don't really want to go into 'proper' quilting at the moment. So, I've bought some nice patterned cotton and I thought I could use a cheap fleece blanket from the high street and sew it to the cotton and some wadding. Then I could turn it the right way, sew all around the edge and I thought I could perhaps sew a few lines along the quilt to hold it all together in the middle. Would this work out, do you think?

    Thanks,

    Kevin x

Hi Kevin, of course it would work. You will have to make sure you secure the layers together before you start sewing through them so they dont move about or pucker. There are lots of different ways to do this but the way I do it is that I pin the layers together, then I sewing lines of tacking (large stitches to hold them together) usually in a criss cross pattern. Then I would "quilt" the pieces together, so far I have always quilted by hand but I want to learn how to do it by machine this year. Then after it is all quilted I would sew a length of binding around the edge. This is usually just a strip of cotton fabric, either matching or contrasting, can be made up from scraps, I cut about 2 inch strips. Then make sure the strip is long enough to go down one edge. Press it in half wrong sides together and sew the strip to the top side of the quilt placing the rough edges to the outside. Then when you have sewn it on you can fold it under the quilt and hand stitch it to the under neath and it will hide all the edge bits. Do this for the opposite side next. Then do the other two edges the same.

You can look at the quilts on my home page if you want to see what the edging looks like.

    Good luck xx

Rufusdog you beat me to it. I was going to say thats roughly how i made the quilt for the moses basket last year.
I managed to sew for a few hour late last night. Will do picture later.
Cupcake theme stuff for DGD's bedroom. I will get it done. I will.

I think one of you on here bought some of the bags of fabric that have been on Ebay from a seller in Tottenham. I have had the listing saved in my watch list for ages wishing I could get some but wasn't sure how to get there to pick them up (local pick up only due to size of them). Well I was looking at the listing again yesterday and saw it finishes in a couple of days so I checked again where the shop was and found it is not too far away from my sister so I rang her and she asked her hubby if he knew where it was and its right by where he works so he told me to buy some and he would go and pick them up today. I will have to arrange to pick them up from them at a later date but at least I will have them. Very pleased with myself.

Aww Mooloo, I know exactly how you feel, my arms play me up something rotten too, some days I cant sew at all although they are not quite as bad now as they were a few years ago but I have good days and bad days. Its so frustrating when you have things you want to do but can't physically do them isnt it.

Cant wait to see what you have done, the cupcakes sound lovely xx

Mooloo - seems the jean machine is not performing as well as advertised.
I got my basket of cards back from the school today - I think I sold 7 out of the 24 I had there.
Yesterday I went into town - went in 8 charity shops looking for costume bits. I got a black skirt for £1 - DD (teacher) is wearing Dickens/Victorian costume for school - only had a white blouse! DD called here last night and I showed her the skirt - pinned it and today I put elastic in the waistband - it was a size 18 and she is a 10/12. I needed to give it a gathered look. Today I also cut up a cotton sheet and made DD an apron, finally I searched out a suitable silver brooch to put at the neck of the blouse - it was open too far down for Victorian. I also washed the skirt yesterday along with the clothes I got for DGD. I got a thank you for doing the costume and my £1 back that I spent!
I was searching for a hand knitted cardigan for DGD - WW2 costume - finally found one for £1 - needs some altering! The other thing I bought was a brown dress - size 10 - not much work to do on this - just going to add some elastic for a gathered waistline look. The dress was £3.75 but I had really struggled to find anything suitable - I will make sure I get my money back.
I went round to DD's tonight to look at the Guinea pig and do the fitting on DGD's costume. I have cut some grey tights down for her and made elastic garters. I found a container suitable for a gas mask box - measured up the string length for that. I still need to find a cardboard box to make into an evacuee's suitcase. Plus I will do a label for DGD to wear - on string - with a safety pin. What would they do without me?

Well done Florencem :) My grandchildren are the same! I have 2 granddaughters (cousins) who are in the same school year/class and a few years ago they both had to have a Victorian costume. The trouble was, they told me on Friday after school & they had to be ready for Monday morning! I managed though - went to a jumble sale on Saturday morning and managed to find a long black skirt which was full enough to make a skirt for each of them. I altered two school blouses, added some lace and cut up an old white sheet (never throw any material away;)) to make aprons & mob caps. The teacher was very impressed and even the grandaughters were pleased!:D

I think that was the most challenging costume request given the time allowed, but spraying wellies and boxes silver to make a robot costume for one of my grandsons comes a close second.:rotfl:
