Made a large pencil case for myself last night, lined with my cheap shower curtain (which was a pig to sew). Its turned out ok and big enough for all my bits, apologies for the fork but couldn't find a ruler to show the size :)

A few free patterns on the link above. The journal cover looks really nice.
Thanks for that there are some nice ideas on there, I really liked the teddy.

I had an email yesterday telling me I have won the Cath Kidston ''Make'' book in the Your Home Mag comp. I know I entered a comp in the mag (well Ive entered a lot in the last few wks :rotfl:).
Just have to wait and see now if it does arrive.
    Is this book any good?

Yay! :T Well done on winning - let us know what you think of the book. I love CK materials but not the prices! :rotfl:

Thanks Karmacookie, that does help. I find that CK books do assume you know what she's on about with little direction - or perhaps that's just me :)
Tbh - I like her books for inspiration but feel a bit like it's the same old, same old. I get some of my best ideas from online tutorials or reading other peoples blogs and stealing, ahem I mean borrowing ideas :) What do you think to the book ??

Did you get the bag finished? I've still to sew the strap on, don't think I'm ready to have a go at button holes yet. I had problems making the button loop, couldn't get it to pull the right way round so undid it and just turned in a seam and stitched.

Somebody posted the other day that they thought the projects in this book were a bit easy and suitable for a beginner. I'm not so sure, some of it seems hard to follow and I think some things have been made too fiddly i.e. specs case, skill level 3

I also bought this book the other day (note to self, stop buying books, not very MSE and there are loads of great ideas on the net:) )

i've not made anything yet but the spec case in here looks really easy. It also just seems easier to follow and the ideas more practical. I just can't see myself making napkins anytime soon. Still the CK book is very pretty!

What do you think of Make? It doesn't get good reviews on Amazon

Perhaps it would be more suitable than 'Sew' for a dunce like me? What is the bag like that comes with it? Do you have to make it or just embelish it?

Not that I'm buying any more books, but it is my birthday next month :)

They have cotton fabric from £2.99 yard (including some Rowan print)! Have bought some bits and pieces, not sure what for just because they were pretty and seems like good value, postage was ok too.

    Hi everyone,

sethsgran, thank you for the great link, some nice bits to make (oh my list is getting out of control :rotfl:) me too for the ted :D

Kandip, you have made another beautiful bag (ok pencil case). I found a new good quality plastic type table cloth when having a clear out and Im not sure if that would make a lining for a makeup bag, I will have to let you know :D.

I had read the reviews for the C.K. make book so maybe thats why it was a comp prize :rotfl:.

I have just found this blog http://flossieteacakes.blogspot.com/ and she has listed loads of places to get nice fabric on her home page so Im going to have a trawl through :D

I have been sewing some bits and will have to sort some pic's but Im not as confident as you all here yet but Im working on it :D and loveing it :D
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

  • I did post the other day, that I had got the Make it book by CK, and how disappointed I was with it.

I will be taking it with me to my sewing club to see if anyone wants to buy it off me.

At first glance I thought it was OK for beginners but not for the more advanced sewer, but I didn't actually read the instructions, just looked at the projects. Perhaps it could have been better written.

I haven't made the bag as I want to onsell the whole thing.

I joined the library so now I have a good look at Amazon then go online to the library website to see if the books I am interested in are available in my area. If they are I request they be sent to my local library for a small fee of 25p. I have even suggested titles to be purchased and so far they have bought the books I named.
