I received my Cath Kidston book today with the bag fabric etc. and was quite disappointed. The patterns etc. are very basic
It is very good if you are a beginner, but not if you have some experience.
Hopefully that will help someone who is thinking about buying it.
I go to a sewing club once a month and hopefully someone will want to buy mine from me, as otherwise it is just going to go in the cupboard, with the other books I keep buying.0 -
shirlgirl - your bags are lovely! and u understand you don't want to accidentially ruin them! how about making a little fold/tuck in the strap at the bottom end and sewing it down onto itself? i think it's what i would do.Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. No buying cleaning products. I used MSE advice to reduce my car insurance from 550 to 325!! & paid it off in full!!!0

Really embarrassed here but im not sure what type of thread I should be using on my singer? Is there a certain type I should buy? Whats the best? I have never used my sewing machine before but want to get it out this weekend and have a few goes on scraps as I really want to learn.
Thanks in advance

Hello lovelys - loving all the recent bag pictures, especially the slouchy bag- its fab. I just wondered if one you might help me with a question I have about interfacing.
Im working on my sew pretty homestyle book and it says i need visiline, which, when googled, the uk version is viline fusible interfacing. (im assuming this basically wondaweb?, but using a dry heat without having to dampen first?)
I found some here http://www.calicolaine.co.uk/Haberdashery-Vilene-Products-c2_82/Extra-Heavy-Bondaweb-Wonder-Under-p2707.html?osCsid=a7fccf98bad79fe953b3431c8fd8292d.
I notice in the book that it needs to be double sided but Iv found some in the link below that dosnt need to be ironed on which I think would make it much easier for applying patches e.c.t. Just wondered if anyone has used this before?, what they think of it in comparison? I found it here: http://www.barnyarns.co.uk/Peel-N-Stick-Fabric-Fuse-Sheets-10.8cm-x-12.7cm-pr-26983.html
Also to add-where can I get the wire for the dolls hair from?
Any advice would be much appreciated.0 -

Thanks. I'll have a play and see what I think.0 -

What are you want to use it for? If it just hemming then a roll of wunderweb will do. If you need it for larger pieces for applique work for example then you will need a bigger piece of vilene like the calicolaine one. I tried applique for the first time last month and had a lot of fun doing it. I used this for mine http://www.pelennapatchworks.co.uk/vilene-bondaweb-61-p.asp
which I'm guessing could be this from calicolaine http://www.calicolaine.co.uk/Haberdashery-Vilene-Products-c2_82/Bondaweb-Iron-On-Transfer-Adhesive-p2705.html
What fabric will you be using as the Bondaweb you have chosen is heavy duty and I am wondering if it might be too heavy for a light weight material. Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to help with that.
If you decide to go for the peel and stick I'd be interested to know how yo get on with it as I haven't heard of it before.0 -

If you have a sewing shop near you then go in there and explain that you are a beginner and if they value your custom they will be delighted to help you. It isn't a silly question at all.0 -

Thanks for the reply Flossie. Initially its just for hemming but I know that the wondaweb has shown through when iv used it on trousers before and yes Im using a relatively thin fabric - cotton/linen mainly. Thanks for letting me know that the bondaweb would probably be to heavy- and thanks also for the link to the stuff you use, I will take a look. I'll be wanting to use it for attaching patches to a toy bear that Im going to make from the sew pretty homestyle book, I thought using a peal and stick might be less of a faff but its not a major issue I guess. I will let you know if I end up getting some. x
...just checked that link flossie- is that bondaweb you use double sided? I dont think its says it on the website.0 -

Yep. It has paper on one side which you draw your design onto.
I've just found this http://vlieseline.de/English/Produktvideo.htm?pId=29&vId=16077 a video showing how to use it. Once the elephant is stitched that is it. The last part of the video is for another product 'stitch and tear'
The part I haven't mastered yet is the final stitching bit. It can be done by hand which I think would look nicer on the Tilda characters. If you use a non fraying fabric like felt then it wouldn't need any stitching.
Hope this has helped.0
