I kept thinking all the way through making it 'was I supposed to add that seam allowance' as this seems quite dinky!
Anyhoo, I do love it and so does everyone that has seen it - I gave my bag its first outing to work today, I should have waited until I had given it a quick squirt of stain repellant but I've not got any.

  • I finally got around to finishing my DD's bag. Unfortunately it came out larger than I had anticipated. It would do for DD1 but she's 5 1/2 and the fabric is too babyish (in her opinion!).

This is the site I got it from and this is what mine looks like. I did add a waterproof lining to mine which to be honest gave me the biggest headache because it was so slippery. But it is worth it because it must give the bag strength and it means she can use it for swimming as well as nursery.

Can anyone recommend where I should buy magnetic snaps (for bags etc.)? Not sure if any good online suppliers, the ones Ive seen sell in bulk and although Im happy buying a pack of a dozen or so (or less) I dont really want 50!! The cheaper the better too!!

Also, Ive been told you can buy buttons where you can cover them with the same material that you are sewing with? If thats is right, can anyone tell me what they are called or point me in right direction....

    Thanks all. x

Hi in the sewing book I've got they are called self-cover buttons.

The snaps can be bought on Ebay
  • The self cover buttons can be purchased from Ebay too.

I buy my snaps from a yahoo group - they come from China but I usually receive them within 7 days. She charges $1 (about 64p) for 3 large ones or 4 small. I also purchase plastic snaps from her - these are like press studs and are good for purses etc. and come in all colours. If you ordered $20 (£14ish) it is post free.

in-the-beach-hut, thank you for the passport tute, was thinking of making one for me and other half when we go on our honeymoon later this year - going to put 'bride' on mine and 'groom' on his, you never know we might get an upgrade lol

I have a question though - was the sizing okay? Just wondered if it was a US blogger whether their passports are a different size, and it's easier to ask you than to dig mine out and measure it! x

i love your idea for subtlely hinting for an upgrade!! :T

it's a good idea to check - i bought a nice one from Mr T's in the clearance sale, was 5.00, i paid 50p, But it's too small. grr. no wonder it was on sale!

I was in hobbycraft the other day and bought these, I bought the sew in magnetic snaps and large buttons to cover, they were a quid or two for a few, not cheap but if you only want to try them and there is one near you it might be worth a go.

This is not strictly my bag - its a cheap laptop sleeve that I use to keep my laptop in (of course.. :) ) inside a larger bag for work.
I am wanting to use my proper bags for work again so I have been carrying this thing around like a file (IYKWIM) so last night I decided to make it into a bag of it's own as I have almost dropped it a couple of times as the material is quite slippy.

I had to hand sew this cotton tape on as the bag is too bulky to go through my machine, and although its dead simple and straight forward believe it or not it took me about 2 hours to do this as the needle stuck each time I poked it into the foam stuff inside!!!
