pennib - I love your basket of rabbits and the monkey (which definitely does look like a monkey and not a bear or a hippo!)

Hi, Thanks so much for your reply - to be honest, your original post was so long ago, I didn't really expect to hear from you, so a lovely surprise!

I was originally looking at some different models, but the 5124 was recommended by the guy at Sewing Machines Direct. My only concern really is that this model has been long discontinued, so it's been difficult finding many reviews, and I wonder about availability of spares, etc.

I hope you don't mind me asking - but in your original post, you said you paid £269. It's up for £299 on their website now. I'm wondering whether it's just gone up in price, or whether SMD are open to a bit of price negotiation?!

    Thanks again :)
I didn't know that the machine is a discontinued model but I suppose that might explain why SMD sell it under their own name. That makes sense now you've pointed that out. I would have thought that spares would still be available but don't really know to be honest. I just assumed that the same basic bits and bobs would be used in several models with additional parts for higher spec machines.
As to the price, I am sure that all the machines are more expensive now. Price negotiation? Well you could ask, you might be in a better position seeing as it a model exclusive to them. The free gift they give is fantastic though. Don't forget to buy some extra bobbins as you never have enough.
  • Pennib, I love your cushion and those bunnies are so cute!

Bobbykins, congratulations on getting your pattern to fit!

Don't know if this is the right place for this question but I want to have a go at sewing stretch jersey fabric. The pattern calls for a twin needle but my head says ballpoint. I've had a look and you don't seem to be able to get ballpoint twin needles. What do I do? I also apparently need a walking foot to make a better job and so the fabric pieces go through at the same rate, but boy, are they expensive! I also don't know which is the right foot for my Singer Curvy 8763 because none of them have my model no listed. Grrr

  • Well I have cut out all my pieces for the front of my cushion cover so I can get on with the fun part, the sewing! I've made up the pattern / dimensions from scratch and seeing as I've never done patchwork before, if it works out I will be amazed. Anyone got any tips on doing patchwork? Should I press each seam as I go along or wait till all done (sorry if silliy question, still learning)?
I'm sure my cushion won't be a patch on your beautiful one Pennib, it's lovely.
I'm in awe of all those people who can make clothes and follow patterns! Maybe I'll be able to do that one day.

Thanks dolly pop, I have spoken with them and got a load of old carp from them so it has been escalated to a claim via PayPal. They have been really difficult, just wanted my fabric or refund and they can't seem to do either!

Sorry you're having such an issue! Hope you can get it sorted via PayPal!

I wouldn't order from them again because of the problems I had, such a shame that the customer service doesn't match the fabrics because she has some beautiful stuff in and her prices are great! :(
