Thanks for the links Kay Peel, very helpful. I love Burda magazine patterns too, but the whole tracing and adding seam allowances is a pain in the backside, wish they included the SA already.

As a child I learnt to sew using Burda. In those days the magazine was in german, so we had a basic suppliment with the english, but all the terms etc on the patterns were in german. But I didnt find making them bigger any problem. I just cut out around them by eye. I still have plenty of burda books, and sister magazines from my teens! Carina is one of them! and as I am 50 thats not bad going really. Its very rare that I buy a commercial pattern these days but have had several from the Sew magazine to last me a while If i want dresses especially.!
The childrens patterns I have downloaded from the internet, or have old burda ones that I bought when my kids were very little.

I made a mini skirt into a shopping bag this week, and I have just started to refashion a long cordrouy skirt into a mini skirt, and making patch pockets etc for it. The rest of the fabric I will turn into some Purses and a bag probably.

My first purse sold on Folksy this weekend. Yeah. So I will attempt to get my photos done tomorrow now, and get more things on the websites. Procrastination got in the way of good intentions all over again.!
I have also cut out a few hexagon patchpieces from some offcuts of fabrics to hand sew together while watching the TV, to make a large pincushion, (well thats what the pattern was that got me making- although I may use them as somethingelse. Depends where my creativitity goes before I am finished.!).
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.
  • Thanks for that Kay Peel, I've looked at various tut's for FBA's and none of them have made much sense but the second link you give is much simpler and seems to work beautifully. Will definitelt try it out.

Mooloo, well done on selling the purse on Folksy, you will have to send me your shop link so I can have a look.

We were given a lovely table today which was too big for our dining room after all so I have it up in my sewing room as a cutting out table. It has two flaps which you can put up but I only have one up at the moment and it is plenty big enough for now, but if I am cutting out something with a lot of fabric I can pull it out and open it right up. I had to move the book shelf out but it only had reading books on it and I now have a kindle so that wasnt a big loss.

I made some cushion fronts while I was up there this afternoon, made three of them and put half a zip on them each, just need to make the backs now.

Thanks for the links Kay Peel - have stored them for future perusal.

In the meantime, I have altered my pattern using the link Justamum provided, as it seemed the best one for princess seams.

I had to do a bit extra "tweaking" to allow, not only for my generous (H cup) boobs, but also my cuddly waist. So I have now remade the bodice again and..............drumroll...........I have a grin like this
    >:D only bigger........

    It fits! :D:D:D:D:D

Thanks to you all for your help and encouragement. :A

I am going to start playing around with the skirt of the dress tomorrow, but that should only require minimal adjustment (I hope).

By the way, before anyone runs away with the idea that this is some fabulously glamorous, intricate ball gown I am attempting, can I just burst the bubble by saying it is a very simple, very plain, summer dress but I am sooooo excited by it. I am such a saddo :o .

    Thanks again you wonderful people.

Bobbykins I don't think your a saddo at all. When something goes right no matter how big/small it's a wowzzer moment :j You will be making ballgowns in no time!

This is another patchwork cushion that I've made. This time with calico instead of linen.

I totally agree. I am in awr of your patience and skills.:rotfl:
I really should put more time into things and create, instead of just make. If you know what I mean.
Rugusdog, I am not sure how to get a link? I will have to go and see? I am Mooloos on Folksy as well as everywhere else under the sun that I go on the internet! Cannot forget who I am then. Although sometimes I have to add a number to the name as someone else is a mooloo too! oh well, not as unique as I thought I was.
Back to the sewing machine while I have the time.

  • Don't suppose anyone has any suggestions for computerised embroidery machine hire (yesterday's post?) or access?

    Much appreciated.
