I'm not sure its the foot that's the problem. I've never had a machine that did zigzag or anything, but this one only goes in one direction! Even to reverse you have to take all the material out and feed it back the other way!

When I say old, it is from around 1930!

You can absolutely 100% guaranteed get a zig-zag foot for an older straight stitch sewing machine. I had one of the ZZ006 Regular Singer Zigzag feet for my 1912 Singer and recently came across another in a box of spares, but I've sent it to a friend. Ebay usually provides but if not, the link above is part of a big site about old sewing machines and she's an utterly reliable source of quality bits and bobs.

Wow! There's some amazing stuff on there. Mine has the long boat shuttles, and the advice about tension is sooo true. I keep a screwdriver next to me when using it, to adjust occasionally.
That said, it's still working and probably will continue. Will I buy a posh all singing all dancing one? Maybe.

I have a more modern sewing machine now, but used old singers for some time.
Depending on what you are wanting to sew really.
I find that I only use my straight stitch, button holes and zigzag. I never seem to get the fancy stitches right. Even though when the machine was serviced they managed to do it?!
If your only making seams and sewing basic things, you dont really need all the fancy stuff. Well I dont.
Having said that, I would love an all singing all dancing embroidery machine to make some gorgeous panels etc, or to add to childrens clothes, but who can afford several thousand pounds!

I had a few more hours in my work room last night, bit of pottering and tying a few projects together that had been left on the side, and I managed to get some more of the Tie bag made, which had been on the bottom of the pile for months and months. I need to finish it with a flap, fastenings and reline it. I dont like the way the instructions have only put lining in the sides, and not the whole bag, I dont like the fact that you can see the seams. So a new lining I think.
I have orders that I also need to tackle and some more Bunting that I want to make for some Birthday Parties that DGD has been asked to in the next month.
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.

Loads for sale on Ebay by the meter. If you want proper baby type muslin, it needs to be 100% cotton and is usually a double layer square, seamed around the edges.

    Hi mooloo

When you said about the fancy stitches working when they serviced it. I have sent my machine back twice now, both times it came back with a scrap of fabric under the foot with all the patterns showing. When it came back this time I got the other sample out and it was identical to the one under it this time, same threads and everything. Made me wonder whether they just put them under after without trying all the stitches as the bobbin that was in the machine was a different colour and was what I had left in there when I sent it back.

I manily use the straight, zigzag and the buttonhole but have used the other stitches occasionally.

I would absolutely love one of the embroidering sewing machine but as you say, they are too expensive for me to be able to ever own one. My SIL has one and she doesnt get on with it, said she regrets buying it and wants to downsize to a more normal machine. I was hoping I might be able to buy it off her at a reduced price but she is giving it to my niece instead. Shame, as she doesnt really sew much, just the odd thing so will be a waste but there you go.

I cut out some more bags the other night but need some more bits from Dunelm Mill before I start sewing them up so will have to wait until OH is home and can take me.

I might make a start on some new cushions later on.

Dunelm.co.uk sells wadding at reasonable prices.

I have used the 200g wadding at £1.99 a metre, which is higher loft and makes a lovely squishy, drapey quilt. They also have much lighter stuff starting at 99p a metre, and you can have home delivery or collect in store and save more money. :)

Thanks so much - I've been visiting my parents for a long weekend, and they've got a Dunelm just down the road so I managed to get some there - didn't cost much at all :j

I picked up my new machine too - it's a Singer in a baby blue case, must be at least 30 years old, as it was my great aunt's and she died 14 years ago. Feeling very grateful today!

Wow thanks for that - never heard of these. My mum has a treadle Singer and would love to be able to do zigzag.
