Hi
I've been pointed in this direction by some people on DFW.
I generally make things like cushion covers, blinds and curtains, using my Nan's ancient Singer machine that used to be a treadle (I'm sure there are lots of them about)
I've recently lost a lot of weight, and still have a chunk of weight to lose, so am looking to get back into clothes.
I've started small though, with a T shirt style top. Unfortunately my machine has no zig zag, (in fact it doesn't even have reverse!) so anything on stretchy fabric is difficult, but at least I've given it a go!Debts at LBM - Mortgages £128497 - non mortgage £27497 Debt now £[STRIKE]114150[/STRIKE][STRIKE]109032[/STRIKE] 64300 (mortgage) Credit cards left 0

I think you can buy a zigzag foot for the old Singers which converts a machine without a zigzag into zigzagable (ok I made that word up :rotfl:).0 -
hello
may i join too? i have just bought dd a machine for xmas (when she is back at school will get it out to check it works etc ready for xmas day).
I have also bought her a project book of projects (clothes bags etc) to make with a metre of fabric.
Can anyone please advise me the best places to buy felt and pretty fabric metres? i'm on the gloucestershire/wiltshire border so happy to shop as well as online.
Also, having had a read i've been looking for the sewing no chat mentioned and the facebook which is mentioned, but can't find either, some pointers would be lovely please.
thanks in advance
update: i have found and am reading the no chat thread, a mine of information
i would still love to know about the facebook page (ie name or how to access please). I tried The Sewing Room but it did not look right...

Welcome newbies
The no-chat thread is here
it sometimes gets lost & needs a bump. so If you find a good looking tutorial then don't forget to add it.
The cheapest place for me to buy is Fabricland, they have a (truly hideous) website but you have to phone to order. I have an actual shop near me so have never needed to do mail order. They do lots of lovely cottons from £3.50 metre! and they do bundles of fat quarters for the same price (basically a metre cut into 4 equal squares roughly 50x50cm rather than in 25cm lengths) I have also bought from here, really good service and the stock changes quite often (although you are buying yardage not meterage) the heavenly halves might be good to go with the book that you have bought.
Others shop at Dunelm, Abakhans, charity shops for duvets/curtains/large size clothes and ebay.0 -
My daughter has just bought a sewing machine from this company. After she ordered it she came across some really bad comments about Coopers which frightened her. She need not have worried, each person she communicated with was very pleasant and helpful. The machine arrived a couple days after the appointed time, which was probably a bit optimistic. It was well packed and works perfectly. I wonder about the veracity of the comments on some of the so-called consumer websites, especially when the owners of the site are not contactable.
i bought my brother ms6nt from them lasy year it arrived the next day and ive had no problems either.0 -

I have been sewing today too, made 3 purses, 2 wallets and a couple of lavender sachets. Feel better in myself for sewing, but the neck is sore now.
Oh well at least I managed more makes and a little tidying of the workroom. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Greaseproof paper?
I don't know if anyone can help with this rather strange query! I use this paper for sewing - making adjustments to patterns, tracing motifs etc as well as for lining my cooking tins.
I finished a roll and bought a replacement and the paper is thicker and brown. Can anyone recommend a brand of the traditional thin white greaseproof please.
ive got a roll of brown morrisons own and a roll of white sainsburys own, its called greasproof and baking paper0 -
welcome to all the new people, hope you all enjoy doing your sewing projects whatever they may be, we have loads of inspiration on here and help of course.0

had some fabric delivered today that i had forgotten I ordered. I am so abscent minded these days! Its cafe au lait stuff and then there is one with cotton reels etc on it, with french writing, and some Christmas stockings one. I cannot even remember who I ordered it from, and there was not much on the packaging. OH well.
May sit and do a bit more of my handsewing patchwork that i take to BF's normally. I managed to cut out the squares for my 6 x 6 pieces, and most are sewn together now, just a couple of rows to add to the square. So I want to finish it and add it to the rest of the quilt? that I am making. Most of it is made out of remenants and the left over pieces from my bags, but one of the fabrics is from a shirt that used to belong to my grandson.
If am so pleased to be feeling much better and be able to get back to the sewing machine.
I just hope that I manage to keep it up, and that i dont over do it without realising and go back to square one. No sewing for nearly 6 weeks was terrible. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0
